Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the United States had nearly 15,000 active banks. In 2024, this number has dwindled to just over 4,000 banks, per the latest count by the FDIC. A large part of this decline is the result of decades worth of mergers and acquisitions, resulting in a few industry behemoths being formed.
