Penurunan Tingkat Adopsi EV

Elektrifikasi adalah tren yang menguasai dunia. Hal ini berlaku untuk EV, serta untuk pemanasan dan proses industri. Namun, belum semuanya sempurna, karena baterai litium-ion klasik mengalami penurunan kinerja yang signifikan pada suhu dingin. Jadi, meskipun ini bukan masalah di California atau China, dua pusat adopsi EV, hal ini dapat menjadi masalah serius di lintang utara.

Meskipun ada keterbatasan ini, kami melihat bahwa tingkat adopsi EV tinggi di negara seperti Norwegia (72% EV dan 14% hibrida), menunjukkan kesiapan kuat penduduk untuk beralih ke EV.

Namun, kasus negara tetangga Norwegia mungkin menunjukkan bahwa tanpa subsidi besar serupa dengan yang diberikan Norwegia, adopsi dapat stagnan di bawah 50% di wilayah tersebut.

Jika sistem baterai meningkatkan kinerja dalam kondisi dingin, wilayah tersebut dan negara serupa lainnya dapat menjadi yang pertama mencapai 100% BEV (Battery Electric Vehicles).

Sampai saat ini, harapan utama untuk meningkatkan kinerja pada suhu rendah didasarkan pada baterai natrium-ion, terutama dengan kemajuan signifikan yang dicapai oleh perusahaan China CATL (ikuti tautan untuk laporan terkait). Namun konsep baru dapat membuka jalan bagi baterai litium-ion yang secara khusus disesuaikan untuk kondisi dingin.

Penelitian ini dilakukan oleh peneliti China di Universitas Donghua (China), Universitas Fudan, Universitas Qingdao, dan Universitas Inner Mongolia. Mereka baru-baru ini mempublikasikan hasilnya di Angewandte Chemie dengan judul “Negative Thermal Expansion Behavior Enabling Good Electrochemical-Energy-Storage Performance at Low Temperatures1”.

Masalah Baterai Litium-Ion pada Cuaca Dingin

Baterai litium-ion masih merupakan bentuk baterai paling kuat dan berenergi tinggi yang tersedia saat ini pada skala yang dibutuhkan untuk EV. Ini mungkin berubah di masa depan dengan baterai solid-state. Atau mungkin baterai litium-ion yang ditingkatkan seperti baterai honeycomb akan seefisien teknologi solid-state.

Namun dalam kedua kasus, masalah kinerja pada cuaca dingin tetap ada. Alasannya adalah cuaca dingin, terutama suhu di bawah titik beku, memperlambat difusi ion litium dalam material elektroda. Untuk saat ini, hal ini dianggap sebagai batas fundamental teknologi, yang dipengaruhi oleh fisika reaksi litium-ion pada suhu rendah.

Satu-satunya alternatif pada EV sejauh ini adalah menggunakan energi baterai untuk menghangatkannya (menghabiskan daya) atau memasang paket baterai yang cukup besar sehingga kehilangan jangkauan dapat diterima oleh pengguna. Setidaknya sampai sekarang.

Elektroda Ekspansi Termal Negatif (NTE)

Konsep utama yang digunakan peneliti adalah memanfaatkan karakteristik yang disebut ekspansi termal negatif untuk material elektroda, atau NTE. Ini adalah material yang mengembang saat mendingin, berlawanan dengan kebanyakan material, terutama logam.

Contoh dalam kehidupan sehari-hari adalah air, yang mengembang saat membeku, membuat es kurang padat dibandingkan air cair.

Pengujian dilakukan menggunakan lithium titanium phosphate LiTi2(PO4)3 atau “LTP”.

LTP

Material ini terbentuk dari struktur kristal yang membentuk kisi 3D dari oktaedra TiO6 dan tetraedra PO4. Ini menciptakan struktur terbuka dan fleksibel yang mengandung baik “rongga” maupun “saluran”, tempat ion litium dapat menempati.

Ketika didinginkan, struktur kristal memanjang sepanjang salah satu sumbu kristalnya. Hal ini meningkatkan jarak antar atom oksigen, memperlebar rongga dalam kisi.

Ruang yang lebih besar pada kristal dingin memudahkan penyimpanan dan transportasi ion litium.

Kinerja Dingin yang Kuat

Peningkatan ukuran rongga tidak sepenuhnya meniadakan mobilitas ion litium yang lebih rendah, tetapi sangat membantu. Peneliti menemukan bahwa pada −10 °C, laju difusi ion litium masih mencapai 84 % dari nilai pada 25 °C. Mereka juga menguji seberapa efisien & stabil baterai tersebut.

Uji elektrokimia pada LTP berlapis karbon pada −10 °C menunjukkan kinerja elektrokimia yang baik dengan kapasitas tinggi dan kemampuan laju tinggi. Daya tahan baterai juga tinggi, tanpa degradasi signifikan pada kapasitas retensi selama 1000 siklus pengisian/pengosongan (retensi kapasitas 96,8 %).

Aplikasi Masa Depan

Jenis elektroda baru ini perlu diteliti potensinya dalam EV yang dirancang khusus untuk iklim dingin.

Hal ini kemungkinan menjadi persyaratan bagi EV yang harus beroperasi di wilayah dengan musim dingin keras, seperti Kanada, Skandinavia, Rusia, daerah pegunungan, dll. Setidaknya untuk menjadi standar, bukan sekadar mobil sekunder yang menyenangkan bagi pengemudi yang cukup kaya.

Mungkin juga terdapat material elektroda ekspansi termal negatif lain yang memiliki sifat elektrokimia lebih baik. Jadi kemungkinan besar, diperlukan lebih banyak penelitian untuk menemukan material elektroda ideal untuk cuaca dingin.

Dalam jangka panjang, teknologi ini juga dapat memiliki aplikasi penting dalam eksplorasi luar angkasa, dengan kendaraan dan sistem penyimpanan energi yang beroperasi di orbit, Bulan, atau Mars yang kemungkinan memerlukan kinerja kuat bahkan dalam lingkungan yang sangat dingin.
