Η Abbott κερδίζει έγκριση FDA για το Libre Duo 10 Day Glucose‑Ketone Sensor

The device economics sit on top of an installed base Abbott describes as more than 8 million Libre users across more than 60 countries. Continuous glucose monitors are a razor-and-blades business: each user replaces a sensor roughly every 10 to 15 days, so a new sensor category that broadens the eligible population carries recurring revenue weight that a capital-equipment clearance does not. Libre Duo 10 Day is labeled for people with diabetes ages 2 and older who face higher risk of elevated ketones: a group Abbott defines as people with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes using insulin or glucose‑lowering drugs such as SGLT2 inhibitors.
Ketone monitoring addresses diabetic ketoacidosis, the most common hyperglycemic emergency in diabetes. Hospital admissions for DKA have risen 55% over the past decade, according to research cited in the announcement, and the condition can progress within hours when insulin runs short and the body burns fat for energy. Current practice relies on blood or urine ketone tests that capture a single moment, and a Diabetes Care survey of nearly 3,000 people with Type 1 diabetes found only 18% had a blood ketone meter at home. Libre Duo 10 Day measures both analytes continuously and is designed to alert the wearer when ketones rise, without a separate test.
«If glucose is the speedometer, ketones are like the check engine light—providing an alert that something may need attention», said Chris Scoggins, executive vice president of Abbott’s diabetes care business, in the company’s announcement.
The commercial infrastructure around the sensor is largely pre-built. The device runs on the latest-generation Libre app already in the U.S. market and feeds the LibreView provider platform and LibreLinkUp caregiver app. Abbott also lined up the automated insulin delivery channel in advance: the company expects the sensor to work with Beta Bionics’ (BBNX ) iLet and Sequel Med Tech’s twiist pump systems by the end of 2026, with Insulet and Tandem devices in 2027. Separately, Abbott and MiniMed (MMED ) are collaborating on an exclusive integration pairing Abbott-manufactured dual glucose‑ketone sensors with MiniMed’s smart dosing systems, also expected in 2027.

The labeling carries a durability disclosure worth noting against the “10 Day” name. In Abbott’s wear study, 84.1% of sensors in adults and 68.8% in pediatric users lasted the full 10 days, meaning roughly 16% of adult and 31% of pediatric sensors may not reach the labeled wear period. In a consumables franchise, sensor longevity directly shapes per‑patient sensor consumption and replacement economics.
The safety labeling also instructs users to confirm treatment decisions with a fingerstick blood glucose reading when sensor values do not match symptoms, and states that ketone output should be used in conjunction with glucose levels. The urgent‑low‑glucose and urgent‑high‑ketone alarms may not catch every instance below 55 mg/dL or above 3.0 mmol/L.
Clearance is not adoption, and three commercial variables remain open. Abbott did not disclose U.S. pricing for Libre Duo 10 Day. Reimbursement (whether pharmacy‑benefit and insurance coverage extends to a dual‑analyte sensor, and at what copay) will be determined as the launch proceeds, and the announcement contains no coverage commitments. The company has not given a specific launch date beyond later this year, and the partner‑pump integrations that would make the sensor part of closed‑loop insulin delivery are staged into 2027.
The competitive context runs through the same channels. The U.S. launch arrives as Abbott’s Diabetes Care segment posted $2.188 billion in second‑quarter 2026 sales, with continuous glucose monitor sales up 11.0% on a reported basis, per the company’s 16 Ιουλίου 2026 earnings release. That release also disclosed that Abbott secured CE Mark for the Libre Duo family in Μάιος 2026, with launches in select European countries planned for later this year, giving the U.S. authorization a commercial template already staged abroad. The U.S. version authorized 25 Αυγούστου 2026 covers the 10‑day sensor for ages 2 and up; the 15‑day adult Libre Duo that received CE Mark alongside it was not part of this authorization.
