The operational record behind the plan is now substantial by drone-delivery standards. Amazon says Prime Air has already delivered hundreds of thousands of packages in 2026, and that its sites post the highest average delivery volumes of any drone delivery operation in the United States, with thousands of deliveries made daily.

Prime members receive free drone delivery on orders of $50 or more. Members with orders under $50 pay a $2.99 delivery fee, and customers without a Prime membership pay $4.99 per delivery.

The catalog side is equally concrete. Nearly all items weighing 5 pounds or less that fit in a large shoebox are eligible, which Amazon says covers more than 60% of the items customers most frequently order. The company cites groceries, cosmetics, medications, and electronics, naming Apple iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones, Apple AirPods, and Ring doorbells among delivered products. Orders arrive in as fast as 30 minutes, with most landing around 60 minutes after checkout.

Prime Air’s legal foundation is a Part 135 air carrier certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration, the same framework that governs commercial air carriers and the highest level of FAA oversight available for drone delivery. Amazon received the certificate in 2020 after submitting detailed evidence of its operating safety and demonstrating those operations to the agency, a submission built on more than 500 validated safety and efficiency processes.

That certification rung matters for reading the expansion plan. A Part 135 certificate authorizes ongoing commercial air operations rather than a bounded trial, which is what lets Amazon plan site-by-site rollouts across metro areas instead of seeking permission for each flight corridor. The company’s Detect-and-Avoid system, which lets the drones monitor surrounding airspace and make independent real-time routing decisions, underpins the safety case for flying beyond an operator’s line of sight in suburban airspace.

The regulatory ground under the entire industry is still shifting, though. The FAA’s proposed rule for routine beyond-visual-line-of-sight drone operations, published 7. august 2025, would create a standardized permit-and-certificate pathway covering package delivery and other commercial operations, replacing the current system of individualized exemptions and waivers. The docket has drawn more than one million public comments, and the comment period was reopened 10. februar 2026; the rule remains proposed, not final. For now, Amazon’s Part 135 framework and its existing authorizations carry the expansion.

The drone fleet itself is fully electric, engineered to fly in light rain across a range of temperatures, and produces sound during drop-off below the level of an idling delivery truck for roughly 30 seconds, according to the company. Onboard cameras process navigation and obstacle data on the aircraft itself, with no live feed monitored by any person.

ZIP codes with Prime Air coverage are subject to change, the company notes, and not every address inside a listed ZIP code is eligible for service. Whether the sixfold footprint arrives on schedule will be measurable site by site, against the 11-site baseline operating today.
