As for the company’s financial position, it recently reported its Q3 2025 results, which showed a GAAP net income of $2.438 billion, or $1.18 per share, and $2.348 billion, or $1.13 per share on an adjusted basis.

During this period, NextEra Energy Resources had GAAP net income of $1.275 billion, or $0.62 per share, and $1.102 billion, or $0.53 per share on an adjusted basis. It also added 3 GW to its backlog, bringing the total to almost 30 GW. FPL, meanwhile, had GAAP net income of $1.463 billion, or $0.71 per share, and capital expenditures of $2.5 billion. By adding cost-effective solar and storage to its gas-fired fleet along with its four nuclear units, FPL diversified its generation fleet.

Just this week, NextEra Energy announced that it is working with the biggest oil company in the US, Exxon Mobil (XOM -0.69%), to build a large data center site that will be powered by natural gas. The 1.2 GW power plant, for which they have secured 2,500 acres of land in the Southeast, would reduce emissions by utilizing Exxon’s carbon capture technology.

The site will be marketed to a hyperscaler, which refers to a big tech company building data centers to train and run AI applications, in the first quarter of next year.

While NextEra is the largest renewable energy developer in the US, it is currently leaning into natural gas to meet the growing demand from data centers and plans to bring as much as 8 GW of gas generation online by 2032, and is developing a pipeline of 20 GW of gas generation.

The company is also planning to build 15 GW of power for data center hubs by 2035, including at least three data center campuses currently being developed with Alphabet’s (GOOG -1%) Google. In October, NextEra also announced a deal with Google to restart its 615 MW Duane Arnold nuclear plant, Iowa’s only one, through a power purchase agreement.

CEO John Ketchum, however, called 15GW a “fairly conservative” target, adding, “Quite frankly, based on what we’re seeing today, we’ll be disappointed if we don’t do more.” At NextEra’s investor conference, he said that there’s a potential upside to build 30 GW of new generation by 2035. The data center hubs, Ketchum said, will use all forms of energy.

Huge power demand from AI data centers, he noted, is raising affordability concerns and “hyperscalers can solve that problem by bringing and paying for their own power generation and infrastructure.”
