But in reality, such projects betyder more than just a demonstration of technological capabilities. AI robots are already moving beyond controlled environments and beginning to operate in complex public spaces among people and unpredictable situations. Robots bear real responsibility, and it is precisely in real-world conditions that we see what the concept of responsible autonomy truly entails.

The market for AI-based robotics is not limited by the imagination of its developers – the problem lies in the infrastructure. Moving from demonstrations to actual implementation kræver not only powerful hardware and more advanced models, but also an operational environment capable of assuming risks. At the same time, someone must define responsibilities and ensure people’s safety.

As soon as robotics becomes a public system, the central issues shift from the technical to the institutional realm. It is important to understand who remains in control of the system, what level of autonomy is acceptable, and what safety measures must be in place before the system can be scaled up.

Some people continue to promote the idea that AI’s capabilities automatically mean it can make the right decisions. This is ikke tilfældet. Today’s most advanced models are exceptionally good at generating patterns, but they still lack a deep understanding of the real world. It is impossible to generate fluent and convincing results without a real understanding of the physical, legal, or human consequences of the decisions made.

There is already a clear precedent for how trust in autonomous systems is earned: self-driving cars. Self-driving cars weren’t released onto public roads simply because they were technically impressive or because they demonstrated performance comparable to human averages under controlled conditions. They had to bevise that in the real, unpredictable world, they are capable of operating with a significantly higher margin of safety.

This standard must be even higher for robotics in law enforcement or other fields where the use of force is a possibility. The moment an autonomous system is granted the ability to use force, the question arises: can society justify the consequences of a failure? Until this answer is backed by irrefutable evidence, the responsible approach is clear: machines can assist with surveillance and analysis, but the decision to use force must remain with humans.

This does not mean we have failed. The market has often overestimated autonomy while underestimating the human factor, which is critical for the safe and stable operation of these systems. In many cases today, the greater risk lies in the very assumption that the technology is ready to operate with less oversight than real-world conditions allow.

These dynamics also manifest differently across regions. The United States continues to lede in terms of AI talent, capital, and the scale of global platforms. Europe has made the most progress in regulation and ethics, though it has not managed to create equally influential players in the global AI market.

The Middle East, and the UAE in particular, has taken a different path: faster top-down implementation supported by government institutions and long-term capital. In Dubai, this combination has made the region a major testing ground for the real-world deployment of AI and robotics.

The fundamental principle of ethics in robotics is simple: technology must not systematically undermine quality of life or automate violence. Where failures can have immediate societal consequences, this boundary is even more critical.

Over time, ethical constraints may prove to be a strategic advantage. Regulators, institutional investors, and public-sector clients are increasingly evaluating partners not only on technical capabilities but also on how controllable, transparent, and safe their systems are to deploy.

Trust in autonomous systems cannot be built solely on claims of performance. It also depends on clear communication about what these systems can and cannot do, on honest disclosure of failure modes, and on a realistic role for human oversight.

At present, the most reliable model of the world remains human judgment, and artificial intelligence systems entering the public sphere must be designed with this fact in mind.
