About Cosmos (ATOM):

Cosmos is an ecosystem created with the aim to connect sovereign, decentralized blockchains. The main feature of Cosmos is the Cosmos Hub, a blockchain that provides services to the Interchain, which is a network of connected blockchains. The native token of Cosmos is ATOM.

History

Cosmos was created in 2014 as a product of Tendermint, the consensus protocol of Cosmos. There were three founders of the project: Jae Kwon, Ethan Buchman, and Zarko Milosevic. (Tendermint is a BFT (Byzantine fault tolerance) protocol).

The white paper for Cosmos was published in 2016, and the token sales were held in 2017. The token sale ended in April 2017, and the company managed to raise $17.3 million. Twenty percent of the tokens were allocated to Interchain Foundation and All in Bits, while 80% were for the investors. In 2020, Tendermint CEO Jae Kwon resigned from his post. Peng Zhong has replaced Kwon as CEO of the company.

Features

ATOM stakers receive rewards for securing the services available on the Cosmos Hub. The rewards are generated and distributed in the following ways: distribution of collected transaction fees and inflation of the total ATOM supply to reward stakers. The staking process involves “locking up” the digital asset for economic security. Stakers can also participate in the direction of the project by voting on proposals.

The Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol of Cosmos can enable easier communication. The inter-connected blockchains use Tendermint Core. These blockchains are called zones and the interaction of zones mainly involves token transfers.

The services provided by the Cosmos Hub include a decentralized exchange, interchain staking (upcoming feature), IBC connectivity and decentralized bridges, and storage space for digital assets.

The open-source, modular Cosmos SDK can enable developers to build interoperable blockchains.
