Summary

Coinbase’s System Update 2025 marks a strategic push beyond crypto into tokenized stocks, prediction markets, derivatives, payments, and AI-driven investing—all unified within a single platform.

Toward Becoming An Everything App

The world of crypto is moving fast toward mass adoption and convergence with more established financial institutions. We saw this move recently with the start of Gemini (GEMI -2.58%) into the prediction market, following the company’s successful solving several legal issues that had been pending for years.

Another example, although unsuccessful so far, is Custodia Bank’s appeal to obtain access to a Fed Master Account.

Other major crypto actors are on the move to expand their offer as well. On December 17th, Coinbase (COIN -0.66%) had a major reveal entitled the “Coinbase System Update 2025.” It covers many topics all at once, looking to turn Coinbase into an “everything app” for all financial matters.

This includes stock trading, tokenization, prediction markets, Futures and Perpetual Futures Trading, Solana Decentralized exchange (DEX) trading, AI, and more.

Coinbase System Update 2025: Products, Markets, and Strategy

Overview

By announcing its Coinbase System Update 2025 in a San Francisco event, the company has moved into an offensive position as other crypto exchanges are also trying to expand into new markets and looking to obtain authorization to do so.

It is best summarized by the two slogans at the beginning of the presentation:

“The Future of Finance is on Coinbase”

The Future of Finance is on Coinbase | Brian Armstrong, CEO

“Introducing the Everything Exchange”

Introducing the Everything Exchange | Max Branzburg, Head of Consumer Products

This indicates that Coinbase’s roots might be in crypto, but it has ambitions going much further than just crypto markets.

“Coinbase is now the best place to trade every asset, not just crypto. In time, we believe everything will be tokenized.”

Brian Armstrong – Coinbase CEO

Stocks & Tokenization

This offer, unrolling now, is for trading U.S. stocks using Coinbase Capital Markets, all in the same app that Coinbase users already have for crypto holding & trading.

Trading will be done with “normal” USD or stable coin USDC (USDC +0%).

The key difference with other traditional trading platforms is that the roadmap points toward “tokenized” stocks—essentially a token/blockchain-based asset that replicates 1-to-1 the underlying stock, which will be held by Coinbase.

The trading will also be free from the usual limitations of traditional stock trading markets.

“Traders will get zero-commission trading without the constraints of traditional market hours – trade your top stocks 24 hours a day, five days a week.

We plan to add thousands of additional stocks over the coming months.”

The extended hours will mostly be available for specific eligible stocks, and Coinbase warns that reduced liquidity and wider spreads may occur.

The same system will be extended to non-US Coinbase users at a later date.

“To begin down that path, we plan to launch Coinbase Tokenize, our new end-to-end institutional platform for tokenizing real-world assets.”

Prediction Markets

Sometimes equal to “betting markets”, prediction markets allow their participants to try to predict the future outcome, which can be about financial markets, but also political shifts, sports matches, entertainment, technology, etc.

Outcome is binary (yes or no), and prices are set by the crowd, with the platform algorithm keeping things tidy.

“Each contract pays $1 if the event happens and $0 if it doesn’t. The live price reflects the market’s odds—for example, a price of $0.65 suggests a 65% implied chance of the event occurring.

You will be able to manage your prediction market positions alongside your existing crypto, equities, and cash balances in the same trusted, simple, and unified interface you know.”

This puts Coinbase alongside other giants of the sector like Kalshi (which is regulated) and Polymarket (which provides access to offshore users without U.S. authorization), as well as Gemini, which just received the authorization to also join the prediction markets.

Futures and Perpetual Futures Trading

Futures are a financial instrument well-known to commodity traders and used for many other financial assets.

These derivative financial assets allow for buying or selling an asset (commodity, crypto, stock index, etc.) at a set price on a future date, locking in costs or profits.

Perpetual futures are similar to a normal futures contract. But they differ in the sense that they have no expiry date (both crypto and traditional futures).

These trading tools are generally used with leverage to limit the amount of capital needed to bet on price swings.

“Make bigger moves with less upfront capital, and take advantage of more favorable tax benefits when trading across crypto markets and commodities, all on a streamlined interface that makes trading derivatives as easy as buying bitcoin.”

For advanced traders, this system will offer up to 25x intraday leverage for commodities futures and up to 10x for crypto contracts, with volume-based fees as low as 0.005% maker + a $0.15 charge per contract.

It will provide access to Coinbase’s TradingView charts, technical indicators, and custom watchlists, and will execute trades with real-time order book information.

Solana DEX Trading

Decentralized exchanges (DEX) use smart contracts to enable cryptocurrency traders to execute trades without an intermediary.

Coinbase’s DEX is now expanding to add Solana tokens to its system. Here, too, this can be done directly from the main Coinbase app.

This is done by integration directly into Coinbase Jupiter, Solana’s leading DEX aggregator.

Coinbase Business

Coinbase Business is a financial platform designed for startups and small businesses to tackle their operations with crypto.

On December 17th, 2025, it became available to all eligible businesses in the U.S. and Singapore.

It provides:

  • Instant global payments with lower transaction fees and no chargebacks.
  • Seamless integration with common accounting software.
  • Enterprise-grade security with built-in transaction monitoring and sanctions screening.
  • Competitive variable yields on USDC holdings, subject to market conditions, eligibility, and program terms.

In addition to these features, soon, businesses will get the same trading experience rolling out on the Coinbase retail platform, allowing businesses to hold and swap hundreds of different cryptocurrencies, stocks, and every token they need.

Coinbase Advisor

This new AI-powered “Advisor” for financial management is directly accessible in the main Coinbase App.

It represents an almost human-like 24/7 market analyst, as well as a personalized financial advisor. Advisor’s model is curated by portfolio managers with over 75 years of combined experience.

AI combines professional methodologies with real-time market data, the user’s inputs and current holdings, and its personal risk profile to construct a strategy that is personalized to this specific user.

This AI can also help convert a trading idea into action in the Coinbase app.

It can cover everything from crypto, USDC Lend, and, coming soon, following the December 2025 announcement, equities, derivatives, options, & prediction markets.

The advice is provided by Coinbase Advisors, LLC, which is a CFTC-registered Commodity Trading Advisor and NFA member.

During the Beta period, Coinbase Advisor is available to select users and otherwise exclusively to select Coinbase One subscribers at no additional cost.

Base App

The new Base App, Coinbase’s on-chain everything app, is now available in more than 140 countries. It brings together into one place social, trading, payments, app discovery, and earning.

The idea is to replicate what social media did with information, but with financial assets, so that our tendency to fall for endless scrolling can become a productive activity.

“At the center of the app is a new social feed that’s the ‘for you’ page of asset discovery.

Discover content, coins, creators, and communities, and then trade in just a few taps. Follow top traders, get notified when they create content or make trades, and copy their moves.”

Developer Support

Coinbase’s Developer Platform is now a full suite of capabilities centered around the four pillars:

  • Custody.
  • Payments.
  • Trading.
  • Stablecoins.

This includes easy-to-embed self-custodial stablecoin wallets into any platform, enabling customers to seamlessly pay in stablecoins at checkout.

For example, Shopify has already launched stablecoin checkout, and payment service providers like Checkout.com and PPRO are launching their own solutions in partnership with Coinbase in 2026.

Coinbase also enables developers to create their own custom-branded stablecoins, backed by flexible collateral, including USDC.

“Coinbase Custom Stablecoins offer: the ability to embed your brand in every transaction; rewards on balances with best-in-class economics; and a seamless issuance process managed by Coinbase.”

Partnerships with Flipcash, Solflare, and R2 will see the launch of Custom Stablecoins for their customers in the coming months.

Coinbase also works in establishing global technology standards, notably with x402.

“x402 is an open internet standard that makes it easy to attach a stablecoin payment to any web request – it enables AI agents to pay for content and execute transactions using stablecoins.”

In the past 30 days before “Coinbase System Update 2025”, $200M of annualized transactions was enabled by x402. The x402 Foundation is seeking to further the development of this standard, together with Cloudflare and other partners.

Prediction Markets Yes Rare Often Offshore

Stablecoin Payments Native No Partial

Conclusion

Coinbase is making a massive entry into many new markets at once, and leveraging its already massive presence in crypto to become a major financial “everything app.”

With a move into tokenized stocks (including 24/5 trading), prediction markets, future & perpetual trading, Solana DEX trading, and expanding B2B services, Coinbase is moving fast and getting a range of offers almost none of its competitors can match.

In addition, the centralization of all these services in one app, stablecoin-based payment solutions, AI investment agents, and involvement with new payment standards give Coinbase a strong position to further leverage its 10.8 million monthly active users.

So while the battle between crypto exchanges and crypto versus traditional finance is far from over, Coinbase attacks in all directions, including in the territory of traditional financial institutions, positioning it to become one of the future’s leading investment firms.

Investor Takeaway

Coinbase is positioning itself as a vertically integrated financial platform rather than just a crypto exchange. If regulatory execution keeps pace with product ambition, COIN could evolve into a hybrid fintech-exchange model with few direct competitors.
