Nostr – A Better Twitter?

You must have heard chatter about Nostr being a better alternative to Twitter. But what is it exactly? And what makes it better than Twitter? Let’s take a deep dive into it!
What is Nostr?
Nostr is a new social media platform that has been gaining traction recently. It is similar to Twitter in the sense that it allows users to share and interact with content in real-time. However, Nostr provides users with a much more enhanced experience than Twitter.
It is a decentralized, censorship-resistant global social network created anonymously by Twitter user @fiatjaf.
Being censorship-resistant means that it is designed to be difficult or impossible for outside parties to censor or block content on the platform. This is achieved by distributing the data and information on the network across many different servers, making it difficult for any one entity to control or shut down the network.
“A decentralized network based on cryptographic keypairs and that is not peer-to-peer, it is super simple and scalable and therefore has a chance of working,” is how it is described on Nostr’s official website.
Nostr aims to give users the freedom to express themselves without fear of retribution or censorship. This is unlike the current social media channels designed to maintain a presence but without respecting a person’s civil rights, responsibilities, and freedom.
How Does it Work?
Jack Dorsey co-founded Twitter in 2006 and left the firm in Nov. 2021 so that the company could move on from its founders. Since he moved out of Twitter, the company has been bought by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, but the social media giant hasn’t changed its ways. In fact, the social media platform has found itself in a “State of Flux” since Musk took over it. Moreover, the social media giant is still banning accounts left, right, and center and is implementing policy changes in a bid to remain relevant.
Taking a stand against Twitter, some users started moving to its alternatives, such as Mastodon. However, they realized these alternatives are no better, as even here, a server operator can control your identity, and there is no incentive to run servers. After all, both systems are in control of your identity, and you can still ultimately be censored.
Having understood the pulse of the masses using social media platforms, Nostr decided to do things differently. Instead of relying on any trusted central server, Nostr is based on cryptographic keys and signatures, making it tamper-proof and resilient.
On Nostr, to publish something, you must first sign your post with your key and send it to multiple relays, which are servers hosted by either yourself or someone else. Now, to get updates from other people, you ask multiple relays about them. Basically, data can be fetched from and published to any relays of your choice.
Anyone can run a relay whose task is to simply accept posts from some people and forward them to others. “Relays don’t have to be trusted. Signatures are verified on the client side,” states Nostr.
This way, this decentralized social platform is based on two components: clients and relays. Each user runs a client, and anyone can run a relay.
By utilizing this system, Nostr solves the problems of censorship, users getting banned, servers being closed, spam, data storage, and heavy content like videos.
Gaining Support & Recognition
The platform is already receiving a lot of support, with former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey donating roughly 14 BTC (worth $245,000 at the time) to fund Nostr’s development.
After Dorsey announced that he would donate $1 million annually to the encrypted messaging app Signal, Koty Auditore urged Dorsey on Twitter to fund Nostr. Dorsey had recently published a blog post expressing his views on the need for a native internet protocol for social media when he agreed to fund Nostr.
This week, former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden hailed Nostr as a replacement for Twitter as he tweeted about how Nostr doesn’t limit people to express themselves to just “280 characters.”

He further advised Musk not to fight Nostr as it just might be the “only thing that can save his business,” as he noted that Twitter’s core political problem is a liability for content they exclusively control.
“By moving user-generated content to the Nostr protocol (and getting encrypted DMs for free), while retaining control of their own front-end experience, the government must go chase somebody else,” suggested Snowden as to how Nostr can save Twitter.
He further stated that “the first movers to (honestly) show governments their company *legitimately* lacks the ability to unilaterally delete inconvenient speech from the internet will benefit.”
Meanwhile, in a post on Nostr, as shared by a Twitter user, Snowden talked about how his experience of using Bitcoin has never felt as powerful as it does on Nostr. “The instant, effectively-free transactions that spring from having so many people on Lightning Addresses is like arriving on a different planet,” he added.
Why so Much Attention?
Nostr has been gaining a lot of attention which makes sense given the increasing need for censorship-resistant global social networks in today’s world. With the rise of social media, more and more people are using the internet to connect with others and share information. However, this also means a greater risk of censorship and government control.
Giants like Twitter and Facebook have been used to disseminate information and promote political agendas. Their popularity has led to a desire for similar platforms that are not subject to censorship, allow users to communicate freely, and provide unfettered access to information.
Decentralized social media networks like Nostr offer many benefits over traditional centralized social media platforms. By giving users more control over their own data and communications rather than relying on centralized servers or intermediaries to handle and store their information, Nostr helps protect users’ privacy and prevent data breaches.
A censorship-resistant global social network allows people to connect without fear of government interference. It also allows for the free flow of information and ideas, which is essential for a healthy society. In today’s world, where the internet is increasingly being used for social interaction, a censorship-resistant global social network is essential.
This is why Nostr, an effort to rebuild social media, has been receiving attention. It has some special ideas for providing users with a more secure and private way to communicate and share information online.
But the Best Tech Doesn’t Always win
The decentralized Twitter may feel like the future, but the best tech doesn’t always win. In fact, sometimes it fails miserably, and there are several reasons for this.
For starters, the market may not be ready for the new thing. Timing is just one factor that can determine whether a piece of technology succeeds or fails, but it’s an important one.
If technology is too far ahead of its time, it may not find the right market to succeed. On the other hand, if it’s just behind the curve, it may not be able to catch up.
Most importantly, people may prefer to stick with what they know and are comfortable with rather than try something new. Not to mention, if a new product or service doesn’t reach a critical mass of users, it may be difficult for it to gain traction.
Betamax vs. VHS format war is one example of this phenomenon. Betamax was a video cassette format developed by Sony in 1975. It offered higher video quality and longer recording times than its main competitor, VHS (Video Home System), developed by JVC. However, VHS won the format war and became the dominant standard for home video cassette recordings.
This happened because VHS tapes were cheaper to produce than Betamax tapes, which made them more accessible to consumers. Additionally, VHS had more support from the movie industry and a larger market share, which helped to attract more retailers and manufacturers to support the format.
This illustrates how technological superiority alone is insufficient to ensure market success. Factors such as cost, convenience, and industry support also play an important role in determining which products or services will ultimately be successful.
On top of it all, established companies may have an advantage in terms of resources, distribution networks, and brand recognition, which can make it difficult for new companies to enter the market.
So, no matter how great the engineering is at Nostr, it will take something special for Nostr to overcome it because Twitter has a first-mover advantage.
Massive First-mover Advantage
Compared to sites like Nostr and other sites, Twitter has a massive first-mover advantage. The social media giant has already secured a large user base, which makes it more valuable for users to join and for businesses to advertise on the platform. As more users join, the platform becomes more valuable, which creates a self-reinforcing cycle that can be difficult for competitors to break.
Twitter has also become a household name and is well-known for its micro-blogging format. This has helped the company establish a strong brand and build a loyal user base. This means that Twitter has a wealth of data on its users, which it can use to improve its algorithms and tailor its content to individual users, making it difficult for competitors to match Twitter’s personalized experience.
Furthermore, Twitter is integrated into many third-party apps, which makes it easy for users to share content and engage with the platform. This has helped the company build a vast distribution network that is impossible to replicate.
This means that Nostr will have to change things up a whole lot if it wants to become successful because, despite its many issues, Twitter remains a favorite among the masses.
