PAX Gold (PAXG ) is a regulated token representing beneficial ownership of physical gold. Each token corresponds to one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold held for token holders in segregated, LBMA-approved vaults. PAXG combines allocated-bar ownership with the ability to trade or transfer fractional units on a blockchain.

The product is now materially different from early descriptions. Paxos converted from a New York limited-purpose trust company to a national trust bank supervised by the U.S. Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in December 2025. PAXG also expanded from Ethereum (ETH ) to Solana (SOL ) in June 2026, monthly reserve attestations are now performed by KPMG, and its current fees and redemption mechanics have changed.

PAXG can make gold easier to transfer, but it does not remove commodity, issuer, custody, liquidity, network, or legal risk. It is also not a dollar-pegged stablecoin: its dollar value rises and falls with gold.

What Is PAX Gold?

PAXG is an asset-backed token launched in September 2019 by Paxos. The company itself was founded earlier; PAX Gold was not founded in 2012, as the previous version of this article incorrectly stated.

Under the current PAXG terms, each token is equal to one fine troy ounce of London Good Delivery gold. Holders have beneficial, pro rata ownership of specifically allocated bars rather than an unsecured claim on a general pool of metal. Paxos compares the token to a warehouse receipt: the economic gain or loss on the underlying gold belongs to the token holder.

London Good Delivery bars meet standards established by the London Bullion Market Association. A bar is much larger than a retail coin and can vary in exact weight. PAXG divides ownership of those bars into fungible digital units, while Paxos’s internal allocation system identifies which bars support a holder’s balance.

PAXG is therefore a hybrid product. A blockchain records the token, but the underlying asset remains physical gold under regulated custody. On-chain transparency cannot independently prove the gold’s existence or condition; reserve reports, physical inspections, vault controls, legal segregation, and regulatory supervision address those off-chain elements.

How Bar Allocation Works

Paxos says every PAXG is allocated to specific gold bars at all times. When a balance does not cover a complete bar, the holder owns a proportional share of one or more bars. As tokens are issued, transferred, combined, or redeemed, the system can reallocate ownership to consolidate holdings.

The public Gold Allocation Lookup can show the serial number, brand, gross weight, fineness, and fine weight associated with a supported on-chain address. An address holding enough PAXG for a complete bar may be allocated to the whole bar, while smaller holders share it with other owners.

This allocation is stronger than a generic promise to maintain an equivalent amount of gold, but it still depends on Paxos’s records and the terms governing the relationship. An exchange user may not be able to look through a pooled custodial address to a personal bar allocation. Moving PAXG to a supported self-custody address can provide clearer on-chain attribution, while introducing private-key and transaction risks.

Regulation and Bankruptcy Segregation

PAXG was initially issued by a New York Department of Financial Services-regulated limited-purpose trust company. On December 12, 2025, Paxos completed conversion to Paxos Trust Company, National Association, a national trust bank supervised by the OCC.

Paxos states that allocated gold is held on a segregated, bankruptcy-remote basis for the benefit of PAXG holders. In practical terms, customer gold is not intended to be available to satisfy Paxos’s general corporate creditors if the company becomes insolvent.

That is a meaningful legal protection, not an absolute guarantee of frictionless recovery. Insolvency administration, record reconciliation, court proceedings, sanctions, fraud, operational failures, competing claims, and vault access can still delay or complicate enforcement. PAXG is not a bank deposit, is not legal tender, and is not protected by FDIC deposit insurance.

The issuer also maintains compliance controls. Paxos can restrict issuance or redemption, freeze or seize tokens when legally required, and prohibit transactions connected to unlawful or sanctioned activity. A regulated structure reduces some counterparty risks while making censorship and eligibility risk explicit.

Monthly Attestations and Physical Verification

Paxos publishes a reserve attestation for PAX Gold each month. Reports dated from February 28, 2025 onward are issued by KPMG LLP under AICPA attestation standards; earlier reports used WithumSmith+Brown.

The monthly examination compares PAXG issued with fine troy ounces held in the gold reserve as of a specified month-end time. Investors should use the latest report on the PAXG transparency page, read the notes, and confirm whether all supported networks are included in the supply calculation.

Paxos also disclosed that Bureau Veritas performs an annual physical audit of the vaulted gold. Paxos explicitly notes that the physical-inspection work is limited and does not by itself attest to ownership, valuation, or overall backing. Monthly reserve attestation, annual physical inspection, regulatory examination, and on-chain supply each answer different questions.

An attestation is a point-in-time test rather than continuous monitoring. It does not guarantee future solvency, token liquidity, flawless custody, or a particular gold price. Investors should pay attention to publication delays, modified opinions, reporting-scope changes, and any difference between outstanding token supply and reserve ounces.

Ethereum and Solana Support

PAXG launched as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum. In June 2026, Paxos added native PAXG on Solana after upgrading its contracts for multi-chain issuance. Paxos’s current supported-assets material lists both ERC-20 and SPL versions.

The token’s economic backing is intended to be the same across networks, but operational risk is not identical. Ethereum and Solana use different wallets, fee models, transaction formats, validators, and smart-contract environments. An exchange may support one network but not the other.

Verify the official network and mint or contract address before every withdrawal or DeFi interaction. Counterfeit tokens can reuse the name and ticker, and unofficial bridges or wrappers can add a separate issuer and redemption dependency. Never assume that a PAXG-branded balance on another chain is issued or redeemable by Paxos.

Network expansion can improve liquidity and application access. It also divides activity across venues and increases the number of contracts, integrations, or cross-chain controls that must reconcile to one reserve. Investors should check whether redemption through Paxos supports the exact token and network they hold.

Buying PAXG Through Paxos

Verified and eligible Paxos customers can convert U.S. dollars or unallocated Loco London gold into PAXG. The direct purchase quote is based on live London gold pricing sourced through Paxos’s market partner and normally can be accepted for five seconds.

The platform’s direct creation and redemption windows follow London gold market hours, while exchange order books can trade around the clock. This can cause secondary-market PAXG to move at a premium or discount when the underlying wholesale market is closed or direct arbitrage is unavailable.

Paxos’s April 2026 guidance lists a 0.03 PAXG direct minimum because the standard small-order creation charge is 0.02 PAXG. There is no minimum token balance, and the ERC-20 token is divisible to 18 decimal places. Third-party exchanges can set different minimums and trading fees.

As of September 5, 2026, Paxos has temporarily waived direct creation fees through September 30, 2026. A temporary promotion should not be treated as a permanent product feature. After it ends, the published tiered creation schedule applies unless Paxos changes or extends it.

Redemption Options and Current Fees

Verified customers can ask Paxos to convert PAXG into U.S. dollars, unallocated Loco London gold, or allocated physical gold, subject to eligibility, compliance review, minimums, and fees.

Physical allocated-bar redemption requires at least 430 PAXG per bar plus the fee. The actual bar may weigh less than 430 fine troy ounces; excess tokens are credited back after Paxos selects the bar and calculates its exact weight. The customer is responsible for arranging and paying for delivery according to Paxos’s instructions.

Smaller holders can redeem into dollars or eligible unallocated-gold accounts without taking delivery of a full bar. Paxos has also described third-party physical-gold retailers, but availability, jurisdiction, spreads, and terms should be confirmed directly rather than assumed.

Paxos changed its direct redemption fees effective September 1, 2026. The current schedule uses rolling 30-day net redemptions and applies marginal rates by band: 0.125% for the first $2 million, 0.25% for the portion from $2 million to $10 million, 0.35% from $10 million to $20 million, and 0.50% above $20 million. An additional 0.05% in-kind fee applies to conversion into allocated or unallocated gold.

These issuer fees do not cover every cost. Exchange commissions, bid-ask spreads, Ethereum gas, Solana fees, currency conversion, bank wires, dealer costs, delivery, insurance, and taxes may apply. Always check the live PAXG fee schedule before acting.

What Determines the PAXG Price?

The principal reference is the value of one fine troy ounce of London gold. Gold itself responds to real interest rates, inflation expectations, central-bank activity, currency moves, geopolitical stress, mining supply, jewelry and industrial demand, investor flows, and futures positioning.

PAXG’s exchange price can diverge from spot gold because it has its own liquidity and costs. The premium or discount reflects market hours, venue depth, redemption access, transfer fees, counterparty concerns, geographic demand, and arbitrage capacity. A thin trading pair may quote a fair-looking last price while offering poor execution for a large order.

PAXG does not generate native interest. A lending platform or liquidity pool can offer a return, but that yield comes from borrowers, trading fees, incentives, or leverage and adds smart-contract, counterparty, liquidation, and liquidity risk. Tokenized gold should not be marketed as automatically yield-bearing.

PAXG Versus Other Ways to Own Gold

  • Physical bullion: Removes token and smart-contract risk but requires verification, delivery, insurance, secure custody, and a dealer exit.
  • Gold ETFs: Often provide deep brokerage liquidity and regulated securities-market protections, but holders own fund shares rather than an on-chain token and pay an expense ratio.
  • Unallocated gold: Can be efficient for wholesale trading but is generally a claim on an institution rather than ownership of a specific bar.
  • Gold futures: Offer leverage and price exposure but have margin, expiry, roll, and liquidation considerations.
  • Tether Gold (XAUT ): Also represents gold in London Good Delivery bars, but uses a different issuer, regulator, vault jurisdiction, network set, fee structure, and redemption process.

The best structure depends on the objective. PAXG is strongest when fractional allocated ownership and on-chain transferability matter. It may be less suitable when an investor prioritizes a securities account, personal possession, minimal issuer discretion, or the deepest possible exchange liquidity.

Risks of Investing in PAX Gold

  • Gold-price risk: PAXG can lose substantial dollar value when gold falls.
  • Issuer risk: Holders depend on Paxos’s operations, records, compliance, cybersecurity, and ability to redeem.
  • Custody risk: Vault providers, insurers, transport firms, and physical controls can fail despite regulation and inspections.
  • Legal risk: Beneficial ownership, bankruptcy segregation, redemption, seizure, and sanctions are governed by contracts and applicable law.
  • Liquidity risk: Market depth can vary sharply by exchange, trading pair, network, region, and time of day.
  • Tracking risk: PAXG may trade above or below the value of its underlying ounce because arbitrage is costly or unavailable.
  • Redemption friction: Direct redemption requires a verified account, and physical delivery requires at least 430 PAXG plus fees.
  • Network risk: Ethereum or Solana outages, congestion, forks, fee spikes, wallet errors, and contract defects can impair transfers.
  • Administrative-control risk: Paxos can freeze or seize tokens under legal authority and apply eligibility restrictions.
  • DeFi risk: Lending, pools, wrappers, and bridges can fail independently of PAXG’s gold backing.
  • Reporting risk: Attestations are periodic and limited in scope; they are not continuous guarantees.

What to Monitor Before Investing

Review the latest monthly KPMG attestation, annual physical-inspection disclosure, outstanding supply, and reserve ounces. Confirm that reports cover both Ethereum and Solana issuance and note any exceptions or publication delays.

Check the live fee schedule, direct purchase minimum, redemption options, platform eligibility, and London gold market hours. For physical redemption, understand the 430-PAXG minimum, exact bar-weight adjustment, delivery process, insurance handoff, and tax treatment.

On exchanges, compare PAXG with spot gold across several venues. Examine bid-ask spreads, order-book depth, volume, deposit and withdrawal status, supported network, and the premium or discount at the size you plan to trade.

Finally, verify the official contract or mint address, especially when using DApps. Identify every wrapper, bridge, oracle, custodian, and lending protocol in the transaction. Gold backing can remain intact while a separate integration fails.

Final Thoughts

PAX Gold gives holders beneficial ownership of allocated London Good Delivery gold in a transferable digital format. OCC supervision, segregated custody, monthly KPMG attestations, annual physical inspection, and bar-level allocation make its backing more concrete than a generic gold-price token.

Its 2026 expansion to Solana broadens access, while the national trust conversion changes the regulatory framework. At the same time, direct fees, a 430-PAXG physical-redemption minimum, platform eligibility, issuer controls, and multi-chain operational risk remain important.

Treat PAXG as tokenized gold, not as a fixed-value dollar asset or an automatic yield product. Verify the latest reserve report and official token address, understand how a position can be exited at its actual size, and compare total costs and legal protections with bullion, funds, futures, and competing gold tokens.
