Lido (LDO ) is a major Ethereum (ETH ) staking protocol best known for stETH, a liquid staking token that lets users retain a transferable representation of staked ETH. Since launching in 2020, the protocol has expanded from a pooled staking service into broader Ethereum staking infrastructure. Lido V3, now live on Ethereum mainnet, adds customizable stVaults alongside the original Lido Core pool.
An investment in LDO is different from staking ETH through Lido. LDO is the governance token of the Lido decentralized autonomous organization (DAO); it does not represent staked ETH and does not itself receive Ethereum staking rewards. New buyback infrastructure launched in 2026 creates a more direct connection between protocol surplus and LDO demand, but the acquired tokens remain DAO-owned and the mechanism is governed by thresholds and caps.

What Is Lido?
Lido is a set of non-custodial smart contracts that coordinates ETH deposits, Ethereum validators, staking rewards, withdrawals, and liquid staking tokens. Users can deposit less than the 32 ETH required to run an independent validator and receive stETH in return.
stETH is an ERC-20 rebasing token. Its balance generally adjusts through daily oracle reports to reflect pooled validator rewards and penalties. Wrapped stETH, or wstETH, represents a non-rebasing share of the same system; instead of its token balance changing, each wstETH becomes redeemable for more stETH as rewards accrue. This format is often easier to integrate across decentralized applications (DApps) and other networks.
Lido should be understood as three connected layers:
- Lido Core pools ETH and distributes it among validator operators through the Staking Router.
- Lido V3 adds stVaults for customized validator, fee, risk, and infrastructure configurations.
- Lido DAO uses LDO-based governance to upgrade the protocol, manage its treasury, approve operators and modules, and set key parameters.
What Problems Does Lido Address?
Ethereum’s 32 ETH Validator Requirement
Native Ethereum staking requires 32 ETH per validator, reliable infrastructure, key management, and ongoing operational monitoring. Lido pools deposits so users can participate with a smaller amount while professional, community, and distributed validator operators perform the technical work.
This accessibility comes with additional protocol risk. Depositors exchange the simplicity and liquidity of Lido for exposure to its contracts, governance, oracle system, validator set, and token-market dynamics.
Illiquid Staking Positions
Directly staked ETH is not a standard transferable token. Lido’s stETH gives users a liquid representation of their pooled staking position. Holders can transfer it, use it as collateral, supply it to decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, swap it on secondary markets, or request redemption through Lido’s withdrawal queue.
Liquid does not mean risk-free or instantly redeemable at a fixed market price. stETH can trade above or below its underlying redemption value, DeFi integrations can fail, and protocol withdrawals depend on available ETH, validator exits, and Ethereum’s own exit queue.
One-Size-Fits-All Staking
The Lido Core pool is designed for standardized Ethereum staking. Institutions, asset managers, node operators, and advanced users may need control over operator selection, fee terms, custody arrangements, insurance, restaking exposure, or validator infrastructure.
Lido V3 addresses those requirements through stVaults. A vault owner can deposit ETH, select an operator and configuration, and optionally mint stETH against the position. The system uses reserve ratios and overcollateralization to protect the fungibility of stETH against validator losses or penalties.
How Does Lido Work?
Depositing ETH and Minting stETH
When a user deposits ETH into Lido Core, the protocol mints a corresponding amount of stETH. Deposited ETH first enters a buffer. The Staking Router allocates available ETH among approved staking modules, which coordinate node operators and validator keys. The protocol then sends validator deposits to Ethereum’s Beacon Chain.
Lido’s staking modules are intended to diversify how validators enter the system. They include a curated operator set as well as modules designed for distributed validators and permissionless community participation. The router can assign different stake limits, fees, and exit priorities to each module.
Rewards, Fees, and Rebases
Validators earn Ethereum consensus rewards, priority fees, and maximal extractable value (MEV), while also facing penalties and slashing. Lido’s oracle committee reports protocol accounting data, and the stETH contract applies the resulting daily rebase.
Lido Core currently charges 10% of staking rewards. Half is directed to node operators and half to the DAO treasury, although governance can change fee parameters. The quoted staking return shown to users is variable—not a guaranteed interest rate—and can fall because of validator performance, network conditions, protocol fees, or penalties.
Withdrawals
stETH holders have two primary exit paths. They can swap stETH for ETH on a secondary market, accepting the market price and liquidity available, or submit a withdrawal request to Lido’s on-chain queue. A request is represented by an NFT until it is finalized and claimable.
Buffered ETH and incoming validator withdrawals can satisfy requests. If more liquidity is required, Lido instructs node operators to exit validators. Processing time therefore varies with withdrawal demand and Ethereum’s validator-exit conditions. The final redemption amount can also reflect rewards or penalties accumulated before finalization.
Lido V3 and stVaults
Lido V3 launched on Ethereum mainnet in phases beginning in late 2025, with its broader stVault functionality active in 2026. stVaults are isolated, non-custodial staking positions that let owners choose validator operators and define product-specific terms.
Vault owners may optionally mint the same canonical stETH used by Lido Core. Because a custom operator setup may carry different risks, the vault cannot generally mint stETH against all deposited ETH. A reserve ratio leaves part of the stake as a loss-absorbing buffer, while health-factor and forced-exit mechanisms help protect stETH solvency.
This design broadens Lido’s addressable market, but also increases system complexity. A stVault can include distinct operator, curator, leverage, restaking, counterparty, or DeFi risks that are not shared by a basic Lido Core depositor.
What Is the LDO Token?
LDO is the ERC-20 governance token of Lido DAO. Voting power is proportional to the LDO balance recorded at the relevant snapshot, and holders can vote directly or participate through delegates and public governance discussions.
LDO does not pay Ethereum gas, represent a claim on deposited ETH, or automatically earn staking revenue. Its core utility is control over the protocol and its treasury. Tokenholders influence contract upgrades, staking modules, operator admissions, fee settings, treasury allocations, and strategic initiatives.
Supply and Distribution
One billion LDO were minted at the DAO’s launch. The original allocation assigned 36.32% to the DAO treasury, 22.18% to investors, 20% to initial developers, 15% to founders and future employees, and 6.5% to validators and signature holders. Early-staker distributions and ecosystem programs moved portions of the treasury allocation into circulation.
Although the genesis supply provides a useful reference, investors should examine the current circulating supply and DAO-controlled balances. Treasury spending, incentives, grants, liquidity programs, and buybacks can change the amount available in the market. Governance control is also concentrated when a small group of holders or delegates commands a large portion of active voting power.
Dual Governance
Lido’s Dual Governance system adds a check on LDO control. stETH holders can escrow stETH or qualifying withdrawal NFTs to signal opposition to a pending DAO action. As opposition rises, execution delays lengthen; at stronger thresholds, governance can be blocked while participants use a “rage quit” process to redeem and exit.
This mechanism does not give stETH holders ordinary control over every proposal. It is a defensive veto and exit system intended to reduce the chance that LDO voters can make harmful changes before stakers have time to respond.
NEST Automated Buybacks
In 2026, Lido DAO launched NEST, an on-chain mechanism that can use a bounded share of protocol revenue surplus to acquire LDO. At launch, NEST compares annualized staking revenue with a $40 million baseline. It allocates 50% of cumulative surplus to purchases, subject to a $50,000 daily cap and a $10 million rolling annual cap. If the cumulative balance falls below the threshold, purchases pause.
NEST launched in treasury-only mode, with purchases executed through CoW Swap and returned to the DAO treasury. A separate liquidity-pool mode can pair acquired LDO with wstETH, but activating it requires governance. The DAO can also change NEST parameters by on-chain vote.
The mechanism creates a rule-based connection between protocol performance and LDO demand, but it is not the same as a token burn or dividend. Acquired assets remain DAO-owned, revenue thresholds may not always be met, and governance can alter or pause the program.

Risks to Consider
- Smart-contract and oracle risk: A bug, exploit, faulty accounting report, or governance error could impair stETH or protocol operations.
- Validator and slashing risk: Poor operator performance, correlated failures, or penalties can reduce staking returns and backing.
- Liquidity and depeg risk: stETH can trade away from its redemption value, particularly during stressed markets.
- Governance concentration: Large LDO holders and delegates may exercise disproportionate control over the protocol and treasury.
- Value-accrual uncertainty: LDO does not automatically receive protocol fees or staking yield, and NEST purchases are threshold-dependent.
- Protocol complexity: Lido V3, stVaults, multiple modules, oracles, and DeFi integrations introduce additional failure surfaces.
- Ethereum concentration: Lido’s scale may attract governance, social, or regulatory scrutiny over staking-provider concentration.
- Competitive pressure: Native staking, centralized exchanges, restaking protocols, and rival liquid staking tokens compete for ETH deposits.

Is Lido DAO (LDO) a Good Investment?
Lido occupies an important position in Ethereum’s staking economy. The depth of stETH integrations, the protocol’s validator infrastructure, and Lido V3’s move into customizable staking give the DAO several potential growth paths. Dual Governance also adds a meaningful safeguard for the stETH holders most exposed to LDO-controlled decisions.
The investment case for LDO is less direct than the use case for stETH. LDO is principally a governance asset, while ETH stakers receive the underlying protocol rewards. NEST improves alignment by using qualifying surplus for token purchases, but it does not grant holders a guaranteed claim on revenue. Investors should evaluate Lido’s market share, staking revenue, stETH liquidity, operator decentralization, treasury activity, NEST execution, and the growth—and added risks—of stVaults together.
