This past year has been one of the most productive for the crypto and blockchain industries. Not only did it bring massive price boosts to pretty much all coins, from Bitcoin to the last altcoin on the list, but it was also marked by a number of major milestones and trends, such as DeFi, NFTs, and as of recently, the metaverse.
More than that, we learned to combine these trends with one another, and even with other industries, which led to a major breakthrough when it comes to blockchain gaming. Blockchain gaming is now obsessed with the play-to-earn model, allowing gamers to engage in their favorite pastime, earn money, gather digital collectibles and either trade them or use them to improve their gaming, and more.
In fact, it feels safe to say that blockchain gaming is about to explode like no other trend before it, and we expect to see it reach entirely new heights in 2022 and beyond. With that said, here are some of the biggest projects in crypto gaming that you might want to keep an eye on in the months to come.
1. Axie Infinity
The first on our list is Axie Infinity — a Pokemon-like game that allows users to buy, sell, breed, and trade unique monsters name Axies. Each of the monsters in this game is unique, and it comes in the form of a non-fungible token or NFT. That means that each of these monsters — as well as other in-game items — can be exported out of the game and sold on NFT markets.
Not only that, but the game also lets you make a profit as you play, utilizing the play-to-earn model mentioned earlier. Essentially, all you need to do is purchase three monsters and you will be allowed to join and explore the Axie Infinity world. Then, you can use your monsters to battle other players and earn the project’s AXS tokens.
Not only that, but you can improve your monsters with in-game items, and make them even more powerful. The same goes for monster breeding — you can create unique creatures, boost their power through upgrades, sell them (or use them in battle) in order to earn. So far, the game has been a major hit and we are looking forward to seeing its progress in the future.

2. Gods Unchained
Next up, we have Gods Unchained — a free-to-play tactical card game that grants players true ownership of all in-game items that they happen to come by. The game’s focus is on competitive gameplay, meaning that players are expected to use strategy and cunning to outsmart their opponents. A large part of it means building their decks in order to be ready for any situation and to pull out a wide variety of tactics on demand.
Meanwhile, there is also a possibility to earn, as the game gives its players total ownership of their digital items, allowing them to sell them, trade them, or use them in the game in any way they want. As such, the cards are just like physical ones, meaning that, once you buy or win them, they are yours.
The game doesn’t involve investments or paying for anything — all that users need to do is register on the website and download the game launcher in order to start playing. They will be granted a free collection of 70 individual cards, and 140 cards in total. The cards are sorted into six decks that players can use to start winning rewards.
3. Illuvium
In the third spot, we have Illuvium — an open-world RPG game that was created on Ethereum’s blockchain. The game offers a massive, open world that allows players to journey across its varied, vast landscapes and seek out god-like creatures called Illuvials. The players’ goal is to find and capture these creatures and discover the secrets of the land which was ravaged by an unstoppable cataclysm. Each of over 100 Illuvials that populate this world has different abilities, classes, and affinities, and players can fuse them to create something new, upgrade them to make them more powerful, and in the end, develop unstoppable fighting machines.
The game’s world was beautifully developed and is filled with impressive biomes and landscapes. In this world, players’ goal is to build a perfect team of creatures that can overcome any challenge. However, the creatures themselves are not enough, so players will also have to engage in creating unbeatable strategies, but also be able to modify them on the fly, whenever they face a new tough opponent. With each victory, they will grow in rank and experience, and as they play, they also get to earn $ILV, the project’s native token, which will then act as a reward for their skill and dedication.

4. The Sandbox
Nearing the end of the list, we have The Sandbox. This is a community-driven platform where users get to monetize assets and gaming experience on the blockchain, but also make and play any game that they can imagine. The project offers endless possibilities, and all that players need to do is use its tools and let their imagination run wild.
The Sandbox comes as a virtual world, where players can build, own, and monetize their gaming experience, and right now, it is best-known for its two major hits — The Sandbox (2011) and The Sandbox Evolution (2016). Combined, these two games have more than 40 million downloads on Android and iOS devices.
The project also features The Sandbox’s NFT marketplace, which allows users to upload and sell their NFT creations, which they can make with the project’s other tool, VoxEdit. Finally, there is the Sandbox Game Maker, which lets you build amazing 3D games, and do it completely free of charge. The user-friendly tool doesn’t require any coding knowledge or experience, and you can start creating visually stunning 3D games in a matter of minutes.

5. Alien Worlds
Last but not least, we have Alien Worlds. This is a decentralized NFT-based metaverse that allows players to explore its vast world, collect scarce resources, and seek out Trilium (TLM) in a stimulated economy. The economy is centered around different worlds on different planets, which also means that the game is combining the NFT and metaverse elements with DeFi.
Players can advance in the game by collecting and staking TLM or simply using it in the project’s DAO. In fact, the gaming metaverse features numerous DAOs, which is one of its unique features. Every coin holder has a stake in deciding how to run the platform, and the more coins get staked, the greater the voting power of the user.
Users can even become leaders, and they also get to choose which Planet DAO to support. In doing so, they are showing their alliance to the planet, which, in turn, lets them earn even more rewards. Becoming a leader is not that easy, but it is also not impossible, and users can even run for candidacy to become Councillors on different planets. The most successful ones can even be Councillors on more than one planet, which allows them to share multi-sig control over the Planet DAO’s account.
The game takes a very unique approach to gaming, governance, and exploration, and it is entirely free to play, so if you like the matters of politics and community governing, this is definitely a game to look into.
