A tokenized fund can trade like a digital object while still behaving like a fund. Its portfolio needs prices, its expenses must be accrued, subscriptions face cut-offs, and redemptions depend on available liquidity. Putting the shareholder record on a ledger changes the operating path; it does not make NAV or fund governance disappear.
The essential distinction is between the token, the fund unit it represents, and the assets held by the fund. Readers new to that hierarchy may want to begin with digital securities.
A tokenized fund is an investment fund whose shares or units are issued or represented through distributed-ledger technology. The token normally represents an interest in the fund, not direct ownership of each security in its portfolio. Holding a transferable token is not the same as possessing an unconditional right to trade or redeem at any moment. Start the review at redeem and burn and work backward. Blockchain fees may be small relative to these functions. Savings are real only when shared records remove reconciliation rather than adding another ledger beside existing systems.
Investors should distinguish portfolio liquidity from token transferability. A token may move between approved wallets around the clock while the portfolio can be sold only during market hours or subject to settlement delays. If redemptions grow faster than liquid assets, the fund may use cash buffers, credit lines, swing pricing, gates or suspension regardless of the token's technical availability.

- Allowlist failure: A wallet is approved for the wrong investor or remains approved after eligibility changes.

A Worked Tokenized Funds Example
An investor subscribes $100,000 to a tokenized Treasury fund at a 4:00 p.m. cut-off. The administrator calculates a $1.0025 NAV after valuing securities and accrued income. Once cash is final, the register creates 99,750.62 units and the smart contract delivers the same number of tokens to an allowlisted wallet. If the investor later transfers them, the receiving wallet must also be eligible; if the investor redeems, tokens are locked and burned as cash proceeds are released.
