Tip Calculator: Quickly Find the Right Tip, Total, and Split

The Tip Calculator helps you decide how much to tip, shows the updated total to pay, and—if you’re dining with friends—how much each person owes. It supports tipping on pre-tax or post-tax amounts and optional bill splitting for fast, accurate results at the table.

1) What the Calculator Does

This tool applies your chosen tip percentage to either the pre-tax bill or the bill plus tax (your choice). It then adds the tip to the original amount to show the total. If you’re splitting the bill, it divides the total evenly across the specified number of people and shows a per-person amount.

2) Inputs

Input Description
Bill The pre-tax bill amount.
Tip percentage The percent you want to tip (e.g., 15%, 18%, 20%).
Include tax? Choose whether the tip should be calculated on the bill plus tax (post-tax tipping) or on the pre-tax bill only.
Tax amount (optional) If tipping on the bill plus tax, enter the tax dollar amount.
Split the bill? Option to split the total evenly among multiple people.
Number of people How many people are sharing the bill (used only if splitting).

3) How It Works (Formula & Calculation Logic)

Let:

  • B = bill (pre-tax)
  • T_x = tax amount (if tipping on post-tax)
  • p = tip rate (e.g., 18% → 0.18)
  • n = number of people (if splitting)

Choose tip base:

  • Pre-tax tipping: Base = B
  • Post-tax tipping: Base = B + T_x

Compute:

  • Tip amount: Tip = Base × p
  • Total: Total = B + T_x + Tip (if pre-tax tipping, use T_x = 0 unless entered for display)
  • Per person (if splitting): PerPerson = Total ÷ n

Note on rounding: Many diners round to the nearest $0.01 or $0.05 for convenience. If you want the per-person amounts to be neat, round PerPerson and adjust the last person’s share by a few cents if necessary.

4) Outputs

Output What It Means
Tip amount The dollar value of the tip at the chosen percentage and base (pre-tax or post-tax).
Total The full amount due: bill + (optional) tax + tip.
Per person If splitting, the amount each person pays. Otherwise, not shown or equals the total.

5) Practical Use Cases

  • Restaurants & cafés: Quickly choose 15–20% (or more for exceptional service) and see the total.
  • Large groups: Split evenly to avoid mental math and awkward debates.
  • Business meals: Keep consistent tipping policies (e.g., always tip on pre-tax).
  • Travel: Adjust for local customs where standard tipping differs.

6) FAQ

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Both are common. In many places, tipping on the pre-tax amount is standard. Some diners choose to tip on the post-tax amount for simplicity or generosity. The calculator supports either method.

What tip percentage is customary?

In the U.S. and Canada, 15–20% is typical for table service, with higher tips for exceptional service. For counter service, smaller fixed amounts or 10% are common. Customs vary by country—adjust accordingly.

How does splitting the bill work?

When enabled, the calculator divides the total (bill + tax + tip) evenly by the number of people. Everyone pays the same amount unless your group prefers itemized splits.

Can I round the per-person amount?

Yes. It’s common to round each share to the nearest few cents. If you want the group total to match exactly, adjust one person’s share by the rounding difference.

Is service charge the same as a tip?

No. A service charge is usually mandatory and added by the restaurant (e.g., for large parties). A tip is voluntary. If a service charge is already included, many diners reduce or skip an additional tip unless service was exceptional.
