What is Stratis?

Stratis (STRAX ) is a blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) platform designed to bridge the gap between traditional enterprise software and decentralized technologies. Founded in 2016 by Chris Trew, the project distinguishes itself by using C# and the Microsoft .NET framework—languages already widely used by millions of developers worldwide—rather than specialized blockchain languages like Solidity.

Originally launched as a standalone Layer 1 blockchain, Stratis has evolved significantly over the years to stay competitive in the fast-paced crypto sector. Its most recent and significant evolution is the migration to StratisEVM, an Ethereum Layer 2 solution based on zero-knowledge (zk) technology.

The Evolution: From STRAT to zkEVM

The Stratis ecosystem has undergone two major transformations since its inception.

1. STRAT to STRAX (2020)

The project initially launched with the STRAT token. In 2020, the team executed a token swap to STRAX, a new native chain that offered better performance, sidechain capabilities, and a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism. This move was aimed at supporting decentralized finance (DeFi) and more complex smart contracts.

2. Migration to Ethereum Layer 2 (2024)

Recognizing the dominance of the Ethereum ecosystem, Stratis announced a pivotal shift in 2024. The platform migrated from its standalone blockchain to StratisEVM, a Layer 2 solution built using the Polygon CDK (Chain Development Kit).

zkEVM: By utilizing zero-knowledge proofs, StratisEVM offers high throughput and low fees while inheriting the security of the Ethereum mainnet.

Interopability: This move allows Stratis to tap into the massive liquidity and developer tools of the Ethereum ecosystem, while still allowing developers to code in C#.

Key Focus Areas

While early roadmaps from 2019 explored Security Token Offerings (STOs), the platform has since refined its focus into two primary verticals where its C# architecture offers a distinct advantage.

Web3 Gaming

Stratis has positioned itself as a leader in blockchain gaming. By offering Software Development Kits (SDKs) for Unity and Unreal Engine, it allows game developers to integrate blockchain features (like NFTs and in-game economies) without needing to learn complex Web3 coding languages. The platform supports a growing ecosystem of play-to-earn and on-chain games.

Enterprise Solutions

Staying true to its roots, Stratis continues to serve enterprise clients. Its BaaS model allows companies to deploy private, permissioned sidechains tailored to specific business needs—such as supply chain tracking or identity management—without the volatility or public exposure of the main chain.

The STRAX Token

The STRAX token remains the fuel of the ecosystem. On the new zkEVM network, it is used to pay for transaction fees (gas) and acts as the primary utility token for governance and staking. The shift to an Ethereum Layer 2 model has also introduced the token to a wider audience of DeFi investors and liquidity pools.
