What is Provenance Blockchain?
Provenance Blockchain is a purpose-built Layer 1 blockchain designed specifically for the financial services industry. Unlike general-purpose networks, it is architected to handle the complex regulatory and compliance requirements of traditional finance (TradFi) while delivering the speed and cost efficiency of decentralized finance (DeFi).
Originally developed by Figure Technologies, the blockchain launched its mainnet in 2021 and is now governed by the decentralized Provenance Blockchain Foundation. It has emerged as the premier network for Real World Assets (RWAs), recording over $30 billion in total assets locked (TVL) and facilitating billions in monthly transaction volume.
The HASH Token
HASH is the native utility token of the Provenance Blockchain. It serves three primary functions:
- Transaction Fees: Similar to “gas” on Ethereum, HASH is used to pay for transactions and smart contract executions.
- Staking: As a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) network, HASH is staked by validators and delegators to secure the network and earn rewards.
- Governance: Token holders can vote on protocol upgrades and network parameters.
Note: In 2019, HASH was originally distributed via a compliant Security Token Offering (STO) to accredited investors, marking one of the first times a public blockchain’s native token was issued as a regulated security.
Key Use Cases
Provenance has moved beyond theoretical pilots to production-grade financial applications.
1. Lending and Mortgages
Figure Technologies uses the blockchain to record, trade, and securitize home equity lines of credit (HELOCs). By replacing paper-heavy processes with on-chain records, they have reduced loan origination times from weeks to days and cut costs by over 100 basis points.
2. Asset Securitization
The blockchain enables the “tokenization” of debt bundles. In 2020, Figure completed the first-ever securitization on a blockchain. Since then, numerous other financial institutions have used the network to issue and track digital securities, leveraging the chain’s immutable ledger for instant settlement and real-time transparency.
3. Digital Funds & Equity
The network supports capitalization table management and private fund services. In 2025, Figure Technology Solutions filed for a novel “blockchain-native” IPO, aiming to list its shares as digital securities directly on the Provenance Blockchain.
Ecosystem Partners
While Figure remains a primary user, the ecosystem has expanded significantly.
- Apollo Global Management: Uses the chain to explore fund tokenization and efficiency.
- Coinbase & J.P. Morgan: Have participated in pilots or integration tests involving the network’s asset standards.
- NU Blockchain Technologies: (Formerly Provenance Blockchain Labs) Focuses on building developer tools and institutional on-ramps for the network.
By focusing strictly on regulated financial utilities—such as identity primitives and compliant asset standards—Provenance Blockchain has carved out a dominant niche in the institutional crypto landscape.
