The project uses Skyports Drone Services units to deliver blood samples and other important medical supplies in minutes versus hours. Skyports delivery drones are advanced craft capable of autonomously navigating to locations using GPS and other systems.
Notably, the company makes a variety of drones ranging from traditional quadcopters to more advanced hybrid VTOL designs. The latter is capable of lifting off and hovering, as well as converting to traditional propeller-powered flight.

This structure allows the drone to travel farther and faster using less energy. It also enables these drones to land in tight spaces or hover and drop their payload at predetermined locations. Notably, Project Dragon’s Heart uses hybrid VTOL drones that weigh 55 lbs and have a 5.5 ft wingspan.
This configuration enables the craft to travel approximately 62 miles in optimal conditions. Impressively, the design can handle turbulence and winds as high as 30 knots while traveling at a max 2000 ft ceiling.

After careful consideration, the company eventually decided that Welsh Blood Service and Snowdonia Aerospace Centre would be the best partners for the job.
Welsh Blood Service
The Welsh Blood Service (WBS) is the group responsible for hosting blood drives, collecting samples, and testing across Wales. The company seeks to install several vertiports in Talbot Green, Wrexham, and Llanelli to help support the program.
The overall strategy is to have drones fly blood samples to and from the company’s headquarters in Talbot to its blood store in Wrexham. This trip traditionally took several hours to complete due to Wales’ terrain.
Wales is notoriously difficult to transport items to for several reasons. For one, the region has a mountainous terrain that features snow-covered winding roads that span across sparsely located rural communities. This layout eliminates any chance of a fast route using land paths.
The drone delivery service will shave 3 hours off the travel time and provide more flexibility in terms of where and when blood samples can be requested. Unlike drivers, drones don’t need to take lunch breaks or stop to stretch their legs. As such, they are the perfect tool when discussing the delivery of vital medical supplies.
Snowdonia Aerospace Centre
The Snowdonia Aerospace Centre is located in Gwynedd. It originally launched as an RAF airbase in 1941. During this time, it was used to train the UK’s elite fighter pilots, test experimental craft and technologies, like radar tracking, and maintain aircraft.
In 2013, the center was sold before undergoing redevelopment into an updated aerospace testing facility. As such, it’s used to test rockets and other space-related technologies, alongside aerospace developments and drones. Notably, it’s also one of only a handful of airports with designated drone airspace. A such, this partnership makes perfect sense and falls in line with the center’s larger goal to drive the UK aerospace sector forward.
Safety First
Discussing the decision to partner with Snowdonia Aerospace Centre, Project Dragon’s Heart officials explained why the location was chosen. Interestingly, they noted that the location has designated drone airspace located over the sea.
This setting is ideal for testing as it eliminates interference from non-approved aircraft. Additionally, they limit the risk of collateral damage due to crashes or malfunctions. To that extent, Snowdonia Aerospace provides an ideal location for safety and performance enhancement testing.
Using the Funding Wisely
Discussing the use of invested funds, deputy director and head of quality, safety, and regulatory compliance, Peter Richardson, spoke on how his firm doesn’t waste donations. He explained that the project will involve lots of testing and that this funding is crucial to the project’s success, enabling more development and safety testing.

As Project Dragon’s Heart enters its testing stage, there will be several key concerns that must be addressed. For one, the team needs to ensure that their craft can perform as promised, even in the harsh Wales environment, which is often barely visible and freezing.

As part of this strategy, the project envisions sending blood supplies to ambulance crews on site at traumatic events. This strategy would provide first responders with much-needed blood without the need to move the patient or wait for land deliveries.
Drone Highways
Another important part of the project’s strategy is to create drone highways in the sky. This pre-approved airspace would enable the project’s drones to move freely to and from emergencies when needed without risk of collision or delays.
The first drone highway will focus on Wales. However, as the project expands its capabilities and funding, the group will seek to have drone highways extended across the UK with the goal of reducing delivery time and interference.
Awaiting Approval
Of course, this last component of the project will take approval from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). Specifically, the team seeks to convince the Civil Aviation Authority that they can deliver on their promise of fast, safe, and secure flight.

The project’s coordinators have stated that they would like to see this approach used across all urgent medical procedures, including organ transplants, medicines, vaccines, and even to deliver Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for cardiac arrest patients.
