Metal DAO (MTL ) is the governance and utility token associated with the Metallicus ecosystem, which includes Metal Pay, Metal L2, Metal X, WebAuth Wallet, XPR Network (XPR ), and Metal Dollar. It should not be confused with METAL, the separate native coin used for fees and staking on Metal Blockchain.
The distinction matters because older coverage combined the payment app, the Avalanche (AVAX ) -derived Metal Blockchain, and MTL into one network. Today’s investment thesis centers primarily on governance and incentives around Metal L2 and Metal Dollar, plus MTL’s role inside selected Metallicus products. The token also changed in 2024 through an MTL v2 airdrop and an inflationary DAO funding design.

What Is Metal DAO?
Metal DAO is the community-governance layer for parts of the Metallicus product ecosystem. Metallicus is a financial-technology company that develops consumer crypto applications, self-custody tools, decentralized markets, and blockchain infrastructure.
The ecosystem’s main components include:
- Metal Pay: a regulated, account-based application for buying, selling, holding, and transferring supported cryptoassets in available regions;
- Metal L2: an Ethereum (ETH ) Layer 2 built with the OP Stack and connected to the Optimism (OP ) Superchain;
- Metal X: decentralized trading and liquidity infrastructure;
- WebAuth Wallet: a self-custody wallet supporting Metallicus networks and selected external chains;
- XPR Network: a separate Layer 1 network with XPR as its native resource and governance token;
- Metal Dollar: a stablecoin-basket protocol using XMD and governance participation by Metal DAO; and
- Metal Blockchain: an Avalanche-derived network whose native token is METAL, not MTL.
These products share a developer and brand ecosystem, but they do not give MTL identical utility everywhere. Investors should verify which chain, application, and governance contract a claim refers to.
Metal L2
Metal L2 is an EVM-equivalent rollup built on the OP Stack. It executes transactions away from Ethereum’s Layer 1, batches data, and posts the information required to derive its state back to Ethereum.
Because it is EVM compatible, developers can deploy familiar Solidity smart contracts and use Ethereum tooling. Metal L2 is also part of the Superchain design, which aims to standardize bridging, upgrades, and interoperability across OP Stack chains.
Ethereum, rather than MTL, is the native gas asset shown in Metal L2’s network configuration. MTL’s primary role is governance and ecosystem incentives. It is therefore incorrect to assume that every Metal L2 transaction necessarily creates direct MTL demand.
Like other optimistic rollups, Metal L2 introduces sequencer, bridge, proof, data-availability, upgrade, and governance dependencies. “Secured by Ethereum” does not mean that every application, bridge, admin key, or rollup component has the same security as holding ETH on Ethereum Layer 1.
Metal Pay
Metal Pay is a consumer application that connects fiat payment methods with supported digital assets. Availability and functionality vary by country; Metallicus advertised card-based MTL purchases in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand in 2026.
An account on Metal Pay is different from a self-custody wallet. Users are subject to identity checks, service terms, regional restrictions, supported-asset policies, and the custody or execution structure disclosed for the relevant product.
Earlier claims that users universally earn up to 5% MTL through “Proof of Processed Payment” should not be treated as current. The original rewards model evolved, and the live benefit most clearly documented by Metal Pay has included governance participation and product-specific fee or incentive programs rather than an automatic reward on every payment.
Metal X and Decentralized Finance
Metal X refers to decentralized trading and liquidity infrastructure used within the ecosystem. Metallicus has integrated or proposed established protocols on Metal L2, including versions of Uniswap (UNI ), Velodrome, and Ionic.
Users can access swaps, liquidity pools, lending, and related DeFi workflows without depositing into a traditional centralized order book. Self-custody reduces one category of intermediary risk, but it adds wallet, token-approval, bridge, oracle, liquidity, and contract risk.
MTL incentives can attract initial deposits and trading, yet incentive-funded activity can leave when rewards decline. Investors should separate durable fee-generating use from liquidity temporarily rented with newly issued tokens.
Metal Dollar and MTL Governance
Metal Dollar is designed as a basket of supported stablecoins represented by XMD. Users can mint or redeem XMD through protocol rules when the appropriate backing assets and routes are available.
Metal DAO governance can evaluate assets proposed for the basket and other ecosystem initiatives. In June 2026, for example, proposals considered additional regulated dollar tokens; review did not automatically mean final integration.
A diversified basket can reduce dependence on one issuer, but it does not eliminate stablecoin risk. XMD can inherit reserve, issuer, redemption, sanctions, banking, smart-contract, bridge, oracle, and liquidity problems from any constituent. Governance may also move slowly or approve a weak asset.
MTL voting does not create ownership of Metallicus, Metal Pay, or the assets backing a stablecoin. Governance influence is limited to the powers actually delegated to the DAO contracts, offchain voting process, and implementers.
MTL Token Utility
MTL is deployed on Ethereum and Metal L2, while a related representation has used the XMT ticker on XPR Network. Its documented functions include:
- governance: voting on ecosystem grants, integrations, incentives, and supported assets within the DAO’s scope;
- ecosystem incentives: rewarding liquidity, onboarding, development, and other approved activity;
- treasury funding: supporting an elected core developer and approved public-goods work;
- product benefits: qualifying for fee discounts or promotions where Metal Pay or another product explicitly offers them; and
- DeFi participation: supplying liquidity or interacting with MTL markets on supported networks.
MTL is not needed for Metal Blockchain validator staking; that network uses METAL. It is also not the native token of XPR Network, which uses XPR.
MTL v2 and Token Supply
The original MTL design had a stated maximum of 66,588,888 tokens. Metal DAO later approved a new Metal L2 tokenomic model, and an MTL v2 snapshot and airdrop were completed in June 2024.
The proposal added two one-time six-million-MTL grants—one for L2 ecosystem incentives and one for sequencer, development, and open-source work. It also authorized a continuing six-million-MTL annual core-development grant, producing a declining percentage inflation rate as total supply grows.
MTL should therefore no longer be analyzed as a fixed-cap 66.59-million-token asset. Investors should inspect the current v2 contract, total supply, annual issuance, treasury balances, grants paid, and vesting or distribution conditions.
The 2024 airdrop also creates version and network risk. A wallet may display an old Ethereum token, an L2 balance, or XMT on XPR Network. Users must confirm the canonical contract and migration status before trading or bridging.
MTL Versus METAL
METAL is the native coin of Metal Blockchain, a separate Proof-of-Stake network derived from Avalanche technology. It pays transaction fees, secures the primary network through validator staking, and is used by subnets.
Metal Blockchain documentation describes a maximum supply of 666,666,666 METAL, including staking emissions. At launch, MTL holders had a conversion opportunity involving METAL allocations, but the two assets did not merge permanently.
An investor buying MTL on an exchange is not buying METAL and does not automatically earn Metal Blockchain validator rewards. Similar branding and capitalized tickers make verification essential.
Benefits of Metal DAO
- Established product suite: Metallicus operates consumer, wallet, exchange, stablecoin, and blockchain products rather than a single experimental application.
- Ethereum-compatible L2: Metal L2 can reuse mature EVM tools and Superchain infrastructure.
- Community proposals: MTL holders can evaluate incentives, integrations, grants, and protocol assets.
- Fiat access: Metal Pay provides a direct route between supported payment methods and cryptoassets in eligible regions.
- Self-custody option: WebAuth Wallet and onchain markets give users an alternative to keeping every asset in a hosted account.
- Stablecoin focus: Metal Dollar targets a practical payments and settlement use case.
- Active development: Metal L2 documentation, ecosystem governance, and Metallicus products remained active in 2026.
Risks to Consider Before Investing in MTL
- Token confusion: MTL, MTL v2, XMT, and METAL are different representations or assets with different functions.
- Inflation risk: annual development issuance can dilute holders, particularly if funded work does not create durable use.
- Governance concentration: low turnout, large holders, the development company, or funded delegates may dominate decisions.
- Value-capture risk: growth of Metal Pay or Metal L2 does not automatically produce revenue or token demand for MTL.
- Company dependency: branding, development, compliance operations, and major integrations are closely tied to Metallicus.
- Rollup risk: Metal L2 depends on its sequencer, bridge, OP Stack software, governance, and Ethereum data availability.
- Stablecoin risk: XMD can inherit failures from basket assets, issuers, banks, bridges, and redemption mechanisms.
- DeFi risk: smart-contract exploits, oracles, liquidations, impermanent loss, and malicious token approvals can cause losses.
- Liquidity risk: MTL can have uneven depth across exchanges, networks, and decentralized pools.
- Regulatory risk: fiat onramps, stablecoins, banking integrations, DAO governance, and token incentives face changing rules.
- Regional risk: Metal Pay services, funding methods, and asset access are not uniform worldwide.
- Execution risk: DAO votes may be advisory, delayed, technically infeasible, or implemented differently from proposal language.
What Investors Should Monitor
Relevant indicators include active Metal Pay regions and users, Metal L2 transactions and fees, sequencer uptime, bridge activity, DApp usage, Metal X volume and liquidity, XMD supply and basket composition, redemptions, MTL governance turnout, voter concentration, grants approved and paid, actual annual issuance, treasury balances, MTL contract upgrades, and liquidity on Ethereum and Metal L2.
Investors should also ask which product creates demand for MTL and whether that demand is larger than ongoing incentive and development distributions. Ecosystem breadth is useful only when the economic connection to the token is explicit and measurable.
How to Buy Metal DAO (MTL)
MTL is available through selected centralized exchanges, Metal Pay, and onchain markets. Confirm that the venue supports current MTL v2 and the intended withdrawal network.
Uphold – Offers MTL trading in supported jurisdictions. Availability and funding methods vary by residence.
Metal Pay also offers direct MTL purchases in eligible regions. Users should review custody, fees, identity requirements, and withdrawal support before buying. Onchain purchasers must verify the canonical contract and liquidity pool rather than relying on a ticker alone.
Metal DAO Outlook
Metal DAO has evolved beyond the original payment-rewards token described in older material. Its current case rests on governance and incentives around Metal L2, Metal Dollar, Metal X, and a wider suite of Metallicus applications.
The breadth of that ecosystem creates several paths to adoption, but it also makes MTL unusually easy to misunderstand. Metal L2 uses ETH for gas, Metal Blockchain uses METAL for staking, XPR Network uses XPR, and MTL supply is no longer fixed. Investors should value MTL according to verifiable governance power, real token demand, disciplined issuance, and sustained network use—not promotional claims about every product sharing the Metal name.
