ZKSwap is a layer-2 protocol which functions atop the Ethereum network as a decentralized exchange (DEX).  In addition to its DEX capabilities, ZKSwap also offers services such as an NFT marketplace which supports asset minting, as well as a wallet that can be used for payments.

As its name would imply, ZKSwap makes use of ‘ZK-Rollup' technology, which allows for impressive scalability through bundling many transactions into one.  By introducing this scalability, ZKSwap is able to solve one of the major problems related to the Ethereum network – transactions / gas fees.

ZKSwap notes that its approach provides various benefits over more traditional centralized exchanges.  These include,

  • Funds are not stored in one ‘basket' for hackers to target
  • Users maintain full control over assets
  • No KYC required (results in faster registration)
  • Transactions completed with automatic maker model (AMM) rather than through an order book

Throughout the ZKSwap ecosystem, tokens known as ‘ZKS' are utilized in a variety of manner.  Not only do these tokens imbue holders with certain voting rights (allowing for participation in governance), they can be earned through liquidity mining and staking, as well as being used for listing proposals.  ZKS, which are structured as ERC-20 tokens, maintain a total supply of 1billion.

As it stands ZKSwap is a direct competitor with other decentralized exchanges like Uniswap, SushiSwap, and more.  It hopes to differentiate itself through its use of ZK-rollups, providing the benefits of both a DEX and a layer-2 solution.
