Slovakia’s 2023 Election Deepfake Scandal
Another example of AI interference in elections occurred in Slovakia’s 2023 elections. In this incident, a fake video emerged showing Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Šimečka discussing rigging the election. The video was later labeled fake, but not until it had received millions of views and shares on TikTok, Facebook, and Telegram.
How to Detect AI Deepfakes in 2026
Detecting deep fakes is no easy task. It used to be that the technology would leave lots of errors, such as unnatural blinking, weird lighting, or even the appearance of lip syncing. Research suggests humans are often poor at detecting high-quality deepfakes, frequently performing near chance levels depending on context and modality.
One way to determine if a video is a deepfake is to search the image frames using Google to find the original content. They will also try to use the audio to search for unnatural sounds. In some cases, it’s impossible to detect a high-quality deep fake without some technical tools.

The best AI detection tools aren’t perfect, with protocols like Bio-ID scoring 98% in recent testing. The fact that 2% of the deepfakes were discernible to even other AI systems is cause for concern moving forward.

Perhaps the best way to combat deepfakes is to focus on driving media literacy amongst the masses. Keenly, there needs to be a required label that makes it easy to determine if a video is a deepfake or legitimate.

This system is often used with the “Where’s Daddy” AI program that enables autonomous tracking of flagged personnel.

The use of AI systems in law enforcement is another hotly contested debate. Many people were surprised to learn that ChatGPT’s systems flagged Canada’s Tumbler Ridge mass shooter, Jesse Van Rootselaar, as a potential threat.
Specifically, the AI system noted policy violations eight months prior, in which the user repeatedly asked gun violence-related inquiries. The query was sent to several human reviewers, which led to the account being banned and the user flagged.
Why AI Flagging Systems Often Fail to Trigger Intervention
Despite the ringing alarm bells, the company states that the account didn’t cross the threshold for what they consider an active threat. As such, the authorities were never notified. If they had been, they may have been able to interview and save eight lives on February 10th, 2026.
Interestingly, internal company records show that there was a debate regarding notifying the authorities following the account ban. It was later revealed that the shooter opened another account evading the ban before his attacks.
Government officials argue that it was OpenAI’s responsibility to notify the authorities of the suspicious chat, and if they had, it could have helped to save lives. Conversely, the company stated that it will improve its data sharing and response time, lowering its thresholds.

The “We Will Not Be Divided Letter” is an open call for AI employees to publicly oppose fully autonomous weapons and mass surveillance, and to push for enforceable safety commitments across the industry. The letter urges AI developers not support fully autonomous weapons or mass surveillance operations in any way.
It also creates a list of shared safety lines that are designed to prevent a runaway AI scenario. These guidelines include items like including a human-in-the-loop for oversight and to approve any lethal activities. It also champions transparency to prevent abuse.
The core goal of the letter is to create a set of ethical standards that all AI companies can follow to prevent the technology from making life hell for everyone on the planet. It comes at a critical junction in AI adoption as militaries have become reliant on this technology for targeting and information gathering operations.

OpenAI has agreed to deploy models within defense environments under a “lawful use” framework. The company states that it prohibits domestic mass surveillance and requires human responsibility for the use of force.
xAI
Elon Musk’s xAI has been a strong supporter of AI integration into warfare doctrine. Reporting indicates xAI has signaled willingness to support classified government deployments under “lawful use” terms, though operational details remain limited.
Google (GOOGL -3.85%) has had a lot of internal debate regarding the use of its system in warfare. The company had over 300 core workers sign an open letter that urged AI providers to reject open contracts to the Pentagon. However, Google has +$200M in CDAO contracts, meaning that they are under a lot of pressure to bend.
