Blockchain technology is seeing a growth rate of adoption, and evidence of that can be seen in recent trends. In 2021, the NFT sector exploded, primarily focusing on digitizing art and in-game items, and offering them on a variety of markets at affordable and rather high prices alike.

Near the end of the year, the metaverse emerged as the new big trend, offering entire virtual worlds brimming with content and ripe for exploration. With the metaverse usually coming hand in hand with NFTs, the two offered a perfect opportunity for the gaming industry to start developing on a blockchain, and there are plenty of projects that recognized this opportunity and took it.

Now, there are plenty of blockchain games to choose from, and we have compiled a shortlist of our top 5 favorite crypto games to watch in January 2022.

1. Axie Infinity

Axie Infinity (AXS) is currently the largest and most popular blockchain game, involving a metaverse, NFTs, GameFi, and more. The game was inspired by Pokemon, and it revolves around you, the player, traveling around its world, training your monsters, and using them in battles to defeat your opponents and earn rewards.

All monsters come in the form of NFTs, so you can buy them or sell them on various marketplaces across the crypto industry. Once you introduce them to the game, they are yours, and they will remain yours for as long as you own the NFT that they are tied to. Monsters can also be upgraded with new body parts, as the game offers over 500 of them belonging to all kinds of beasts, including aquatic or bird-types, as well as reptiles, bugs, and more.

You can even breed your monsters, which would allow you to mint new NFTs, and you can then either sell them or keep them. And, as mentioned, when you win in battles, you get rewards in the form of AXS, which you can cash out, use to buy more NFTs, stake, or HODL.

2. MyNeighborAlice

Next, we have MyNeighborAlice (ALICE), which is another game, but this one was inspired by a popular game called Animal Crossing. Similarly, MyNeighborAlice comes as a multiplayer builder game based on blockchain technology which offers a metaverse where users can buy and own virtual islands. On the islands, they can collect materials and build various items. The game is also a fun way to meet new players and make friends, and it combines an enjoyable gameplay experience with a great potential to earn.

So, how DO you earn from MyNeighborAlice? Simple. Your goal is to collect and trade NFTs, and also use the game’s native token ALICE to buy assets, invest in skill sets, and even participate in the project’s governance through a DAO, by voting on proposals or submitting your own.

3. Illuvium

Moving forward, we have Illuvium (ILV) — an open-world fantasy battle game that is considered to be the first AAA title to ever dawn on Ethereum’s blockchain. The game is a great source of entertainment for gamers and DeFi fans who seek opportunities, as it allows users to enter the world of Illuvium, inhabited by creatures known as Illuvials.

Players can capture these creatures by besting them in battle, and then nurse them back to health, train them, and use them to win in future battles against other opponents. The game features elements of open-world exploration games, as well as PVP games. You get to roam the metaverse’s landscape, fight existing creatures, defeat other players, participate in quests and daily challenges, and even participate in the communal storyline.

The creatures themselves come with a variety of classes (Guardian, Rogue, Fighter, Empath, Psion), as well as specific affinities (Air, Fire, Water, Earth, Nature). Class and affinity are by far the most important attributes, but there are some additional ones that determine how powerful the creatures really are in battle, such as attack damage, speed, savagery, and alike. All in all, it is a very popular and promising game that you should definitely check out — if not for its NFTs, then for a good gaming experience itself.

4. UFO Gaming

Nearing the end of the list, we suggest checking out UFO Gaming. This is an interesting project that is likely going to attract a lot of SciFi fans in the crypto industry, as it comes as a fully decentralized inter-galactic social gaming token. The project uses a play-to-earn model that is so popular in blockchain gaming, meaning that it also lets you earn assets that you can exchange for or use as regular, everyday money.

Like most other metaverses, it uses NFTs to offer users virtual land. Other than that, the UFO token will be required for most things. In the project’s own words, it offers “One planet, one game. An ever-growing ecosystem of play-to-earn games.” Essentially, the project will collaborate with traditional gaming companies to integrate them onto the blockchain and develop new blockchain gaming features.

Each game will have its own governing planet, and the project will run virtual land auctions, where you can purchase your own piece of land on the planet, earn revenue from the game by performing specific tasks, and, in the future, even use your land to build infrastructure for that planet, such as virtual NFT stores, collection galleries, and more.

This is a huge project in the making that has the potential to be extremely big, especially considering that the gaming industry is, in fact, highly interested in moving to blockchain and using its benefits to its, and its players’ advantage.

5. Alien Worlds

Finally, we have Alien Worlds. This is a decentralized, NFT-based metaverse where players are expected to compete for resources, particularly when it comes to Trilium (TLM), and participate in a simulated economy centered around planetary worlds. This gives a DeFi element to the game, and increases the competitiveness of it all.

Alien Worlds allows you, the player (or “explorer,” as the game calls you) to earn rewards through gameplay and participation in Planet DAOs. You can mine in Alien Worlds and get rewards with the in-game currency TLM, or NFT packs. TLM can also be used for staking, so you can even earn some passive income along the way.

However, the most interesting part of Alien Worlds is that it lets you participate in an entire universe, hopping from planet to planet, where each planet is its own DAO. You can submit proposals, vote on those submitted by others, or even become a community leader for one or more planets.

It is a very interesting project that opens up a lot of new opportunities, even when it comes to a larger metaverse trend, as there is definitely no other game like this one in the world, in or out of blockchain. With that said, definitely give it a look over, and you might just find your new favorite project while doing so.

Conclusion

Blockchain gaming is progressing at an impressive rate, and it won’t be long before the blockchain industry will be able to offer games of all genres, shapes, and sizes, from indie games to AAA titles. Even established gaming companies like Square Enix are taking a deep dive into the metaverse, NFT, and blockchain to pursue this type of gaming, and they are not going to be the last. Everything is getting in place to allow the blockchain gaming sector to explode, and once it does — early movers will be those who will benefit from it the most.
