Stryker Invests $400 Million in CMR Surgical With Acquisition Option

Stryker will make an approximately $400 million (£300 million) preferred equity investment in CMR Surgical under a strategic alliance announced on October 12, 2026, gaining an exclusive option to acquire 100% of the surgical robotics company’s outstanding equity and agreeing to serve as the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius Surgical Robotic portfolio.
The companies disclosed the agreement in a joint announcement datelined Portage, Michigan, and Cambridge, England. The preferred equity investment is intended to support future innovation and global commercialization of the Versius portfolio and is subject to customary closing conditions. The exclusive acquisition option gives Stryker the opportunity to acquire 100% of CMR Surgical’s outstanding equity in the future, subject to the agreement’s terms. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions.
Under the exclusive U.S. commercial agency agreement, Stryker will serve as the exclusive U.S. sales agent for the Versius portfolio. CMR Surgical will continue to lead portfolio development and commercialization in markets outside the United States.
The companies described the alliance as bringing together CMR Surgical’s globally established soft-tissue robotics portfolio, clinical experience and culture of innovation with Stryker’s scale, deep customer relationships, commercial execution and track record of bringing innovative technologies to market. They said the alliance comes as demand for robotic-assisted surgery continues to grow, and presented the Versius platform’s modular architecture as supporting flexibility across procedures, surgeon access and sites of care, with the potential to help health systems expand robotic-assisted surgery within existing operating room workflows while preserving operational flexibility and supporting long-term program economics.
“Soft-tissue robotics is a high-growth adjacency and a natural extension of Stryker’s strengths in endoscopy, visualization and enabling technologies,” said Andy Pierce, Group President, Medsurg and Neurotechnology, Stryker. Pierce said the company had evaluated the segment carefully for years and called the alliance a thoughtful and disciplined entry that combines the complementary strengths of both companies. He said Stryker selected CMR Surgical and the Versius portfolio because of the opportunity to help healthcare providers grow robotic-assisted surgery adoption across a broad range of procedures in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers.
“This strategic alliance is a significant milestone for CMR and a strong endorsement of the technology, clinical experience and global business we have built,” said Massimiliano Colella, Chief Executive Officer of CMR Surgical. Colella said Stryker’s investment will give CMR additional strength to accelerate innovation and the continued global expansion of the Versius portfolio, while Stryker’s scale and deep customer relationships create a significant growth opportunity in the United States. He added that CMR looks forward to welcoming Pierce to its board of directors, citing Pierce’s more than 30 years of MedTech leadership experience at Stryker.
Stryker is listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol SYK and is described in the announcement as a global leader in medical technologies. CMR Surgical is a Cambridge, United Kingdom-based surgical robotics company.
Versius Adoption and U.S. Expansion
CMR Surgical announced on March 26, 2026, that more than 45,000 patients worldwide had been treated using the Versius Surgical Robotic System. The company disclosed the milestone at the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons 2026 Annual Meeting in Tampa and said it reflects sustained multi-specialty clinical adoption that positions CMR as the second most widely used robotic surgery platform globally.
According to the March announcement, Versius has been adopted in hospitals across more than 30 countries, supporting procedures including general surgery, colorectal surgery, urology, gynecology and thoracic surgery. The company said Versius features a modular design with independent robotic arms that can be positioned around the patient and moved between operating rooms, unlike traditional systems fixed in a single operating room.
CMR Surgical is launching Versius in the United States following U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance of the next-generation Versius Plus system in December 2025 for cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). The company said the Tampa conference marked its formal introduction to U.S. surgeons, and that it is building partnerships with hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers ahead of a broader U.S. rollout. Chris O’Hara, CMR Surgical’s President and General Manager, U.S., said in that announcement that with FDA clearance in place and additional indications planned, the company is focused on partnering with health systems to expand robotic-assisted surgery across specialties and care settings.

CMR Surgical’s news index records the company’s recent U.S. regulatory milestones: an October 14, 2024 announcement of FDA marketing authorization for the next-generation Versius Surgical System, a December 16, 2025 announcement that the company secured 510(k) clearance of the Versius Plus robotic surgical system, and an April 29, 2026 announcement that it submitted a 510(k) application to the FDA to expand Versius Plus into gynecology.
The index also lists CMR Surgical’s April 4, 2025 announcement that it secured more than $200 million in funding to accelerate growth, and the January 14, 2025 announcement of Colella’s appointment as chief executive officer.
