Root and Carvana Extend Embedded Insurance Partnership Through August 2028

Root, Inc. (ROOT ) announced on September 1, 2026 that it has extended its exclusive embedded insurance partnership with Carvana, the online car retailer, under an agreement that runs at least through August 2028. The companies’ joint product, Carvana Insurance Built with Root, has sold more than 200,000 policies since launching in 2022, according to the extension announcement from the Columbus, Ohio-based insurer.
Root, which trades on Nasdaq under the ticker ROOT and describes itself as a technology company in car insurance, is the exclusive embedded insurance provider for Carvana, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker CVNA. The product places a personalized insurance quote directly inside Carvana’s online checkout, allowing a customer to complete what the companies describe as a three-click insurance purchase at the point of sale. Root said the arrangement removes friction from a traditionally complex process by combining Carvana’s customer experience with Root’s data science platform.
“The program results, paired with this renewal, demonstrate the power of giving customers exactly what they want: easy, simple insurance—something this program uniquely delivers,” said Alex Timm, Founder and CEO of Root Insurance, in the release.
The release characterized the embedded product as an industry-first, fully integrated experience that brings personalized insurance directly into the car-buying journey, and said the partnership has created a simpler, faster, and more intuitive way to buy both a car and insurance. Root also stated that the program surpassed 200,000 policies sold in less than four years.
Partnership Milestones
Root and Carvana launched Carvana Insurance Built with Root in 2022 as their inaugural embedded insurance product. In the July 27, 2022 launch announcement, the companies said the integration pre-fills key customer information so a buyer can skip data entry and move directly to evaluating quotes and customizing coverage, with the full experience from quote to payment occurring entirely within the Carvana checkout process. Teams from both companies worked for months to build the platform, and the 2022 release noted that an early iteration involved 24 screens in the customer flow, later reduced to three steps. The product was available in 33 states at launch.
On April 14, 2026, the companies announced that the partnership had surpassed 200,000 policies sold. At that time, Root said it was the exclusive embedded insurance provider for Carvana customers in the 36 states where Root then offered car insurance.
“Reaching 200,000 policies is a testament to what’s possible when you build for the customer with a like-minded partner,” said Ernie Garcia, Founder and CEO of Carvana, in the April release. “With Root’s technology- and experience-forward insurance offering integrated seamlessly into Carvana’s retail platform, we have unlocked a simpler car buying and vehicle ownership journey.”
Operating Footprint and Underwriting
According to the extension release, Carvana Insurance Built with Root is exclusively offered, subject to limited exceptions, in the states where Root writes insurance, except New Jersey. Root reported that it is active in 37 markets for auto insurance: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Business is underwritten by Root Insurance Company or Root Property & Casualty Insurance Company depending on the market, the release stated. In Texas, Root also writes business as a Managing General Agent, with policies underwritten by Redpoint County Mutual Insurance Company. Root Insurance Company and Root Property & Casualty Insurance Company are headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, and renters insurance is available through Root Insurance Company in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Missouri, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Tennessee, and Utah.
Root was founded in 2015, and Root, Inc. is the parent company of Root Insurance Company. The company said the Root app has reached more than 18 million downloads and has analyzed more than 37 billion miles of driving data to deliver personalized pricing. For comparison, the 2022 launch release cited more than nine million app downloads and 15 billion miles of driving data collected.
The extension release included forward-looking statements within the meaning of federal securities laws relating to, among other things, expectations about Root’s future business results and its ability to maintain, and drive a significant long-term competitive advantage through, the Carvana partnership. Root cautioned that such statements are not guarantees of future performance and are subject to risks and uncertainties, referencing cautionary language in its Form 10-K for the year ended December 31, 2025, and other SEC filings.
