What is Polygon (POL)?

Polygon (POL ) is an Ethereum (ETH ) scaling ecosystem that provides networks and development tools for applications needing lower fees, faster execution, or custom blockchain infrastructure. The project began as Matic Network in 2017 and was founded by Jaynti Kanani, Sandeep Nailwal, and Anurag Arjun; Mihailo Bjelic later joined the founding team.

POL is the ecosystem’s current token. Polygon introduced POL as the successor to MATIC, with a migration process that allows the legacy token to be upgraded. Current exchange listings and network instructions should be checked carefully because support for the new ticker and individual Polygon networks can vary by platform.

How Polygon works

Polygon includes Ethereum-compatible scaling infrastructure rather than a single product. Applications can use established Polygon networks or build customized chains with supported development tools. Transactions can be processed outside Ethereum’s main execution layer and then connected to Ethereum or other Polygon infrastructure according to the design of the specific network.

This modular approach allows developers to choose different tradeoffs involving cost, speed, decentralization, data availability, and security. Users should evaluate the exact Polygon network and bridge they are using, because assets on one network are not automatically interchangeable with assets on another.

What problems does Polygon attempt to solve?

Ethereum applications can face high fees and limited transaction capacity during periods of heavy demand. Polygon attempts to give developers additional execution environments while retaining compatibility with Ethereum tools and smart contracts. This can make it easier to build payments, games, decentralized finance, marketplaces, and enterprise applications.

Polygon also works on interoperability between chains. Shared infrastructure can help applications move messages and assets across supported networks, although bridges and cross-chain systems introduce their own technical and security risks.

POL token utility

  • Network fees: POL can be used for transaction fees on supported Polygon infrastructure.
  • Staking: Eligible participants can stake POL to help secure supported networks under Polygon’s design.
  • Governance: POL can support participation in ecosystem decisions where governance is enabled.
  • Ecosystem coordination: A shared token can align incentives across multiple Polygon networks and applications.

Potential benefits

Polygon benefits from compatibility with Ethereum’s developer ecosystem and from having multiple approaches to scaling. Developers can reuse familiar tools while choosing infrastructure suited to their application. The transition to POL is intended to support a broader multi-network ecosystem than the original Matic design.

Users may benefit from lower transaction costs and faster confirmation on supported Polygon networks, but those benefits depend on the chosen chain, application, bridge, and market conditions.

Risks to consider

POL is a volatile cryptoasset. Its value can be affected by network adoption, competition among Ethereum scaling projects, staking economics, token supply, developer activity, smart-contract or bridge security, governance decisions, and regulation.

Migration creates operational risk. Users should distinguish current POL from legacy MATIC, verify the token contract and blockchain network, and confirm whether their exchange or wallet handles the upgrade automatically.

How to buy Polygon (POL)

POL availability depends on the platform and jurisdiction. Our how to buy Polygon guide lists supported partner exchanges in the preferred order and explains the purchase process.
