Ontology (ONT ) is a public blockchain and identity platform focused on decentralized identifiers, verifiable credentials, user-controlled data, reputation, and EVM-compatible applications. It uses two native assets: ONT for staking and governance, and ONG for gas and network incentives.

The network experienced a serious operational event immediately before this update. Ontology paused Mainnet on August 31, 2026 after identifying malicious attack activity, then resumed block production on September 2 after a security review and the v3.1.5 upgrade. No user-asset loss was reported, but the ability to coordinate a full pause is an important decentralization and reliability risk.

What Is Ontology?

Ontology launched Mainnet in 2018 to provide identity, data, and trust infrastructure for users and organizations. Its stack includes ONT ID, verifiable credentials, ONTO Wallet, staking, native contracts, and an Ethereum (ETH ) -compatible execution environment.

The 2026 strategy emphasizes verified human data for AI, consent-based identity, reputation, and real-world asset workflows. These are plausible use cases, but investors should distinguish operating software from future plans and marketing claims.

Ontology is a separate network from NEO despite historical connections and an early token distribution to NEO holders.

ONT ID and Verifiable Credentials

ONT ID is a decentralized identifier framework. A user or organization controls an identifier and can receive signed credentials from issuers such as institutions, employers, platforms, or service providers.

A verifier can check the issuer’s signature and credential status without relying on a single login provider. Selective disclosure and privacy tooling can reduce how much personal data must be shared.

The distributed ledger can verify signatures and status; it cannot guarantee that an issuer’s original claim was true. Adoption depends on trusted issuers, legal recognition, interoperability, recovery, and user-friendly privacy controls.

ONTO Wallet and Data Strategy

ONTO is a multichain wallet that combines assets, staking, identity, and application access. Ontology’s roadmap aims to make it the main interface for managing verifiable reputation and consented data.

The project proposes that users could authorize high-quality human data for AI evaluation, training, or services and receive compensation. This requires real buyers, reliable consent, privacy-preserving delivery, fraud controls, and clarity about how ONT or ONG captures value.

Wallet scale should be measured by recurring active users and signed credentials, not cumulative downloads or accounts.

Ontology EVM and Mainnet

Ontology supports Ethereum-compatible contracts alongside its native virtual-machine components. The 2025 and 2026 upgrades reduced gas costs and added newer Ethereum opcodes to make current Solidity output easier to deploy.

EVM compatibility can attract existing applications, but creates competition with many lower-cost chains. Developers still need to test chain-specific consensus, gas, wallets, bridges, and infrastructure.

The August 31 to September 2, 2026 halt followed malicious activity identified during a security review. The team said user assets were not compromised and required sync nodes to upgrade to v3.1.5 after resumption. Investors should monitor the technical postmortem, root cause, independent review, and whether similar administrative coordination remains possible.

Consensus and ONT Staking

Ontology uses a Byzantine-fault-tolerant consensus design with elected consensus nodes and candidate nodes. Holders stake whole units of ONT to nodes and can earn ONG according to node reward-sharing terms.

The highest-staked nodes participate directly in consensus, while other candidates support the broader staking system. Node commission, reward ratios, caps, performance, and unstaking delays differ.

Staking yield is paid largely through scheduled ONG release and fees. A high quoted APR is not a risk-free return; it must be compared with ONT price, ONG price, dilution, node behavior, lock timing, and custody.

ONT and ONG Tokenomics

Ontology uses two tokens:

  • ONT: a fixed-supply staking and governance asset used to vote for nodes and participate in network security; and
  • ONG: the gas and utility token used for transactions, contract execution, node rewards, and ecosystem activity.

ONT has a maximum supply of one billion tokens and is indivisible in native staking units. ONG tokenomics changed in late 2025: 200 million ONG was burned, maximum supply was capped at 800 million, the release schedule was extended to 19 years, and 80% of released ONG was directed to ONT staking incentives.

In January 2026, governance reduced the minimum gas price by 80%. Cheaper transactions can support adoption but can also reduce fee revenue unless activity grows enough to compensate.

Benefits of Ontology

  • Long-running Mainnet: the network has operated since 2018 and continues to receive upgrades.
  • Identity specialization: ONT ID and credentials target a clear technical problem.
  • Dual-token separation: ONT handles staking while ONG handles fees.
  • EVM compatibility: developers can reuse common Ethereum tools and contracts.
  • Multichain wallet: ONTO combines assets, identities, staking, and applications.
  • Capped supplies: both ONT and, after the reform, ONG have stated maximum supplies.
  • Current roadmap: 2026 development focuses on verifiable human data and AI use cases.

Risks to Consider Before Investing in ONT

  • Network-halt risk: Mainnet was paused for several days in 2026 after malicious activity.
  • Centralization risk: a limited consensus set and coordinated emergency controls can reduce censorship resistance.
  • Adoption risk: decentralized identity has faced years of slow enterprise and consumer uptake.
  • Two-token complexity: ONT staking returns depend on separate ONG economics and liquidity.
  • Emission risk: unreleased ONG continues to enter circulation under the extended schedule.
  • Issuer risk: verifiable credentials remain only as trustworthy as issuers and source data.
  • Privacy risk: identity and AI-data systems can expose sensitive relationships or metadata.
  • Competition: wallet, DID, credential, EVM, and AI-data markets are crowded.
  • Smart-contract risk: bridges and DApps can be exploited.
  • Value-capture risk: ONTO Wallet or credential growth may not require meaningful ONT purchases.
  • Regulatory risk: identity data, AI training, staking, and tokens are heavily regulated areas.

What Investors Should Monitor

Track Mainnet stability after v3.1.5, the promised postmortem and third-party review, consensus-node concentration, stake distribution, ONG release and burn data, gas paid, active addresses, EVM deployments, active ONT IDs, credentials issued and verified, ONTO retention, paying data buyers, governance participation, bridge incidents, and token liquidity.

The September 2026 restart is not the end of the incident. Root-cause transparency and sustained operation after remediation are essential to evaluating network security.

How to Buy Ontology (ONT)

ONT is available on selected centralized exchanges.

Binance – Lists ONT for supported customers; restrictions apply.

KuCoin – Offers ONT in eligible jurisdictions.

Verify native Ontology withdrawals and keep enough ONG for gas. ONT and ONG are separate assets with different functions.

Ontology Outlook

Ontology has a coherent identity and data thesis, active 2026 development, a functioning EVM, and reformed ONG tokenomics. Its focus on verifiable human data could become relevant as AI systems face stricter provenance and oversight requirements.

The recent emergency pause materially raises the standard of proof. Investors should require a clear technical explanation, independent verification, stable post-upgrade operation, broader validator participation, and real demand for identity and data services.

Review the official September 2026 restart notice, 2026 roadmap, and staking documentation before investing.
