Investing in LayerZero (ZRO) – Everything You Need to Know

LayerZero (ZRO ) is an interoperability protocol that lets applications send messages and move token representations across blockchains. Its infrastructure underpins omnichain tokens, cross-network applications, and Stargate, the user-facing transfer product acquired by the LayerZero Foundation in 2025.
ZRO is the network’s governance and economic token. The former Stargate token, STG, is no longer the correct standalone investment thesis: Stargate’s DAO was dissolved, and holders were offered an irreversible conversion of STG into ZRO at a fixed ratio.

What Is LayerZero?
LayerZero is a messaging layer rather than a conventional bridge that controls one pool of assets. Developers deploy applications that send instructions between supported networks through immutable Endpoint contracts. Independent verification and execution services then deliver a message to the destination application under the security configuration selected by that application.
The result is a framework for building cross-network DApps, tokens, governance systems, and settlement workflows. LayerZero does not make every connected chain equally secure, and it does not eliminate the risks of the application using it.
LayerZero Labs develops core software and operates optional services, while the LayerZero Foundation and ZRO Association support governance and ecosystem functions. These organizations are related to the protocol but should not be treated as interchangeable with it or with ownership of ZRO.
How LayerZero V2 Works
Endpoints and OApps
Each supported blockchain has a LayerZero Endpoint contract. An omnichain application, or OApp, connects its contracts to these Endpoints and defines which destinations it trusts and how messages should be verified.
When a source-chain transaction emits a message, the message is verified under the application’s configured rules and executed at the destination. The application developer remains responsible for contract logic, peer configuration, permissions, upgrade keys, and recovery procedures.
Decentralized Verifier Networks and Executors
LayerZero V2 separates verification from execution. Decentralized Verifier Networks, or DVNs, attest that a message exists and meets the application’s requirements. Executors submit the verified message on the destination chain.
Applications can select multiple DVNs and define thresholds, allowing security to be tailored to value and use case. Flexibility is useful, but a weak configuration can undermine an otherwise well-designed smart contract. Investors should distinguish the protocol’s available security options from the configuration actually used by a specific token or application.
Omnichain Fungible Tokens
The Omnichain Fungible Token standard lets one token maintain coordinated supply across several networks. A transfer generally burns or locks value on the source and mints or unlocks it on the destination according to the issuer’s deployment.
OFTs can reduce fragmentation created by unrelated wrapped assets, but they still depend on issuer controls, endpoint configuration, and the security of each chain. A canonical token contract does not guarantee that the underlying issuer is solvent or that redemption rights are enforceable.
Stargate After the Acquisition
Stargate remains an active cross-chain transfer and liquidity product built on LayerZero. What changed is its ownership and token structure. The LayerZero Foundation acquisition was approved in August 2025, the Stargate DAO was dissolved, and the governance forum became an archive.
Under the official redemption terms, holders can convert one STG into 0.08634 ZRO. The transaction is irreversible and the submitted STG is permanently destroyed. Users should verify that the official site and contract remain available before interacting, because the fixed ratio does not adjust for market prices.
Stargate revenue was initially split between former veSTG holders and ZRO buybacks. That transition ended in March 2026. LayerZero now states that 100% of Stargate revenue is directed to open-market ZRO purchases, subject to the program’s rules and future governance or operational changes.
What Gives ZRO Utility?
ZRO’s current and proposed economic roles include:
- Governance: holders participate in recurring referenda and other supported protocol decisions.
- Fee switch: governance can activate a protocol fee whose proceeds are intended to purchase and burn ZRO.
- Stargate buybacks: revenue from Stargate products is used for recurring open-market ZRO purchases.
- Wider ecosystem alignment: LayerZero positions ZRO as the single token connecting its messaging protocol, Stargate products, and the developing Zero network.
ZRO has a fixed total supply of 1 billion tokens. In its June 2026 disclosure, LayerZero reported 514 million unlocked and 486 million vesting across the Foundation, strategic partners, and core contributors. Unlocking does not prove immediate sale, but vesting, treasury movements, and buybacks all affect circulating supply and market liquidity.
The fee switch has not become an automatic source of value merely because referenda have supported it. Activation, quorum, implementation, fee demand, and the use of proceeds must all be verified in current governance records.
The Investment Case for LayerZero
Potential Strengths
- Infrastructure adoption: LayerZero connects many applications, tokens, stablecoins, and blockchains.
- Configurable security: applications can choose DVNs and verification thresholds suited to their risk.
- Developer standards: OApps and OFTs provide reusable patterns for cross-network software.
- Revenue connection: Stargate fees fund ZRO buybacks, creating a measurable link between a live product and token demand.
- Token consolidation: converting STG into ZRO removes a competing governance token from the same product stack.
- Fixed supply: the one-billion-token cap makes maximum dilution clear.
Material Risks
- Cross-chain security: messaging errors, misconfigured peers, compromised verifiers, or destination-chain failures can cause irreversible losses.
- Application risk: LayerZero can deliver a valid message while the application contract executes flawed logic.
- Centralization risk: development, optional infrastructure services, treasury holdings, and governance influence may be concentrated.
- Unlock risk: a large vested supply remains allocated to insiders, partners, and ecosystem entities.
- Revenue risk: Stargate usage, fees, and buyback policies can decline or change.
- Competition: Chainlink CCIP, Wormhole, Axelar, native issuer bridges, and intent networks compete for integrations and volume.
- Regulatory risk: cross-border token transfers, stablecoins, sanctions controls, and token buyback structures face evolving rules.
- STG conversion risk: the fixed ratio may differ materially from market prices, and redemption is final.
What Investors Should Monitor
- Message volume, fee-generating applications, supported assets, and repeat usage rather than nominal network count.
- Security incidents, DVN diversity, default configurations, bug bounties, and application-level exploits.
- Stargate transfer volume, product revenue, chain support changes, and documented ZRO buybacks.
- ZRO governance turnout, quorum, voting concentration, and the status of the protocol fee switch.
- Vesting, treasury wallets, circulating supply, institutional holdings, and actual token sales.
- The pace of STG redemption and whether remaining STG liquidity becomes thin or disconnected from the fixed conversion value.
LayerZero’s strongest evidence would be secure, recurring cross-chain activity whose fees translate into transparent ZRO demand without weakening permissionless participation.

Former STG holders should not use a market purchase as a substitute for understanding the official redemption terms. The conversion ratio is fixed, the transaction is irreversible, and tax or legal treatment can vary.
LayerZero Outlook
LayerZero has moved from a messaging protocol with a separate flagship application into a more consolidated stack in which Stargate revenue and future network economics are tied to ZRO. That makes ZRO easier to analyze than STG and ZRO as competing assets, but it also concentrates the thesis around one ecosystem.
Investors should test that thesis against security, application adoption, fee revenue, buybacks, governance participation, and supply changes. Cross-chain infrastructure can become essential while its token captures little value, so measurable economics matter as much as technical reach.
