Its original Layer 1 launched around a high-throughput consensus design called Proof of Believability. In 2025, the project introduced IOST 3.0: a BNB Chain-based Layer 2 strategy focused on real-world asset tokenization, payments, decentralized identity, and DePIN infrastructure.

That shift makes the previous investing guide obsolete. IOST is no longer adequately described as another Ethereum (ETH ) competitor promising 100,000 transactions per second, and 2021 price history says little about the present thesis. Investors now need to assess two connected systems—the legacy IOST mainnet and the newer Layer 2—along with a major token-supply expansion and an ambitious adoption roadmap.

What Is IOST?

IOST is a programmable blockchain ecosystem launched in 2018. Its original network was designed for high transaction throughput, low fees, and consumer-facing decentralized applications. The mainnet uses Proof of Believability, or PoB, a delegated consensus system that combines token staking, node voting, contribution scores, and a reputation-like resource called Servi.

The project’s direction changed materially with IOST 3.0. Announced in March 2025, the newer architecture positions IOST as a specialized Layer 2 on BNB Chain rather than only a standalone Layer 1. Its stated priorities are tokenized real-world assets, payment finance, decentralized identity, and infrastructure incentives.

The legacy chain has not simply disappeared. Official resources still link to the Layer 1 explorer, wallet, bridge, and staking system while separately presenting Layer 2 endpoints and tools. This dual-network structure can preserve an existing community, but it also creates migration, liquidity, and communication complexity.

How the Original IOST Mainnet Works

Proof of Believability was created to select block producers efficiently without relying solely on energy-intensive mining. IOST holders can vote for elected nodes, while the protocol evaluates eligible producers using staked tokens, votes, past contributions, and Servi balances. Servi is non-transferable and is consumed when a node produces a block, which is intended to rotate participation rather than let one producer dominate indefinitely.

The mainnet also uses a resource model in which network activity depends on pledged IOST and allocated gas or storage resources. Developers can deploy JavaScript-based smart contracts, and users interact with applications through compatible wallets.

Older marketing frequently repeated a theoretical figure of 100,000 transactions per second. Investors should not treat laboratory or architectural throughput as demonstrated economic adoption. More useful measures include active users, fee-paying transactions, developer deployments, validator distribution, application revenue, and whether demand remains after incentives are removed.

What Changed With IOST 3.0?

IOST 3.0 adds a Layer 2 network anchored to BNB Chain. Official connection documentation lists chain ID 182, BNB as the native gas asset, an explorer, an RPC endpoint, and a bridge from BNB Smart Chain. The design is described as modular and combines optimistic-rollup concepts, state channels, and specialized sidechains for different use cases.

The strategy has four main pillars:

  • Real-world assets: tools for issuing and managing tokenized bonds, money-market products, real-estate income rights, infrastructure assets, and other off-chain claims.
  • PayFi: payment infrastructure intended to combine settlement with decentralized finance, including merchant financing and yield-management concepts.
  • Decentralized identity: identity and compliance modules for KYC, KYB, permissions, and biometric authentication.
  • DePIN: incentives for physical payment and infrastructure nodes, including the proposed PayPIN network and Signet wearable.

The RWA framework includes token templates, identity checks, oracle feeds, cross-chain mapping, and liquidity components. These features address genuine requirements of regulated asset tokenization, where ownership records, pricing data, transfer restrictions, and legal redemption matter as much as transaction speed.

However, a technical framework is not the same as assets successfully issued, legally enforceable claims, or sustained transaction volume. Investors should separate functioning mainnet components from demonstrations, partner commitments, roadmap targets, and aspirational market-size claims.

PayFi, PayPIN, and the RWA Strategy

IOST describes PayFi as a set of payment-focused financial tools. PayFi Nexus is intended to bring validated merchant and payment data on-chain. PayFi Guardian is a security and monitoring layer, while PayFi Yield proposes deploying idle settlement funds into selected DeFi strategies.

PayPIN is the associated decentralized payment-infrastructure concept. The project proposes merchant nodes, cross-border settlement, rewards, and wearable authentication through a Signet ring. Official materials have set very aggressive targets for geographic reach, merchant onboarding, daily transactions, and tokenized assets.

Those figures should be read as project goals, not independently verified outcomes. Merchant payments require more than a fast chain: licensing, banking access, stable settlement assets, hardware distribution, fraud controls, customer support, and local compliance can determine whether a product succeeds.

Similarly, tokenizing an asset does not eliminate its off-chain risks. Investors in any RWA product must examine the issuer, custody arrangement, bankruptcy protections, governing law, valuation process, transfer restrictions, and redemption rights. IOST token holders do not automatically own the underlying assets or the companies that issue them.

What Is the IOST Token Used For?

IOST is the ecosystem’s utility and incentive token. Depending on the network and program, its intended functions include:

  • Layer 1 resources: pledging IOST can provide gas and storage resources on the original mainnet.
  • Staking and node incentives: tokens support producer voting, staking programs, and infrastructure rewards.
  • Governance: the IOST 3.0 model proposes community decision-making through Nexus DAO.
  • Ecosystem incentives: allocations fund developers, merchants, liquidity, airdrops, and PayPIN nodes.
  • Payments and applications: IOST can be incorporated into payment, RWA, DeFi, and application flows.
  • Value-management mechanisms: the new model proposes fee, MEV, ecosystem, and DAO-directed token burns.

On IOST’s Layer 2, BNB—not IOST—is currently documented as the native gas asset. This distinction matters: activity can increase without every transaction directly requiring IOST for fees. The investment case therefore depends on staking demand, ecosystem usage, incentives, governance, and whether proposed burn mechanisms offset issuance.

IOST 3.0 Tokenomics and Supply Expansion

Tokenomics are among the most important changes. Official documentation identifies approximately 21.32 billion IOST associated with the existing Layer 1 supply and another 21.32 billion issued for the BNB Chain Layer 2 launch. In economic terms, that represents a material expansion of the maximum ecosystem supply, even though distribution is scheduled over several years.

The project assigns 97% of the newly issued pool to community uses and 3% to team incentives. The published breakdown allocates 60% to PayPIN node rewards, 20% to airdrops and stakedrops, 8% to PayFi community incentives, 5% to developer grants, 4% to Nexus DAO, and 3% to the team. Vesting periods range from three to five years, with a separate lock and release schedule for the team allocation.

IOST 3.0 also proposes several burn mechanisms tied to transaction fees, validator MEV, ecosystem partners, and DAO decisions. Burns can reduce circulating supply, but projected burns based on future volumes are not guaranteed. Investors should track actual tokens issued, bridged, staked, burned, held by treasury wallets, and released to recipients rather than relying on modeled outcomes.

Potential Benefits of Investing in IOST

  • Established infrastructure: the original mainnet has operated for years and provides a base of users, nodes, wallets, and exchange support.
  • Strategic repositioning: IOST 3.0 targets payments and real-world assets instead of competing only as a general-purpose Layer 1.
  • BNB Chain compatibility: the Layer 2 can access EVM tools, liquidity, developers, and an established base network.
  • Broad technical stack: tokenization, identity, compliance, oracle, bridge, and payment modules could support more complete financial products.
  • Community-heavy allocation: most newly issued tokens are designated for ecosystem, node, developer, and user incentives rather than the team.
  • Multiple utility paths: IOST can be used across staking, resource allocation, governance, payments, and ecosystem programs.

Risks to Consider

  • Execution risk: IOST 3.0 is a major pivot with ambitious products and adoption goals. Documentation and partnerships do not guarantee usage.
  • Token dilution: newly issued Layer 2 supply can create substantial selling pressure as airdrop, node, ecosystem, and team tokens vest.
  • Unproven value capture: BNB is the documented Layer 2 gas token, so network growth does not necessarily translate directly into IOST demand.
  • Two-network complexity: Layer 1, BNB Smart Chain, and the IOST Layer 2 use different endpoints, token representations, bridges, and wallet requirements.
  • Bridge and contract risk: cross-chain transfers, rollups, oracles, and tokenization contracts introduce additional attack surfaces.
  • RWA legal risk: token holders depend on issuers, custodians, contracts, and local law to enforce claims on off-chain assets.
  • PayFi risk: deploying settlement funds into DeFi can add smart-contract, liquidity, market, and counterparty risks to ordinary payments.
  • Validator concentration: delegated voting systems can concentrate control among large holders, exchanges, or coordinated producers.
  • Incentive-dependent activity: airdrops, stakedrops, grants, and node emissions may attract users who leave when rewards decline.
  • Competition: IOST competes with established Layer 2 networks, payment chains, RWA platforms, and regulated financial infrastructure.

Is IOST (IOST) a Good Investment?

IOST should now be evaluated as a high-risk transition story, not merely as the fast Layer 1 described in older coverage. It has a functioning legacy network and a differentiated plan for Layer 2 payments and real-world assets, but the success of that plan depends on turning an extensive technical roadmap into verifiable adoption.

Prospective investors should monitor live Layer 2 transactions, unique active users, bridge liquidity, RWA value actually issued and redeemable, PayPIN merchants, developer deployments, node concentration, staking participation, token unlocks, and tokens verifiably burned. Roadmap projections should be compared with on-chain and operating results.

If IOST converts its existing community and BNB Chain connectivity into sustainable payment and tokenization activity, the new architecture could revive the token’s relevance.
