Aerodrome Finance (AERO ) is a decentralized exchange and liquidity marketplace on Base. It combines automated market makers with a vote-escrowed incentive system: liquidity providers can earn newly issued AERO, while holders who lock AERO as veAERO vote on where those emissions go and receive the associated trading fees and voting incentives.
This design has made Aerodrome an important venue for launching and trading Base assets. It also creates a more complex investment case than a conventional exchange token. AERO is continuously emitted to support liquidity, veAERO positions can be locked for years, and revenue depends on voters directing rewards toward productive pools rather than simply the largest incentive payment.
What Is Aerodrome Finance ?
Aerodrome is a set of smart contracts that lets users swap tokens, supply liquidity, create pools, and coordinate incentives on Base. It is based on the vote-escrow model developed through Solidly and Velodrome, but has expanded with concentrated liquidity, permissionless launch tools, and a larger economic system for matching token issuers with liquidity providers.
The protocol describes itself as Base’s trading and liquidity hub. It serves four main groups:
- Traders pay fees to exchange tokens through available liquidity pools.
- Liquidity providers deposit paired assets and choose between direct swap fees or AERO emissions where supported.
- Token issuers create pools and can deposit incentives to attract veAERO votes and liquidity.
- veAERO operators direct weekly emissions and receive eligible pool fees and voting incentives.
This is a DeFi marketplace rather than a centralized exchange. Users control their wallets and interact directly with contracts, but they also bear transaction, token, liquidity, and contract risk.
How Aerodrome Liquidity Works
Volatile and Stable Pools
Aerodrome’s original automated market maker supports volatile and stable pool curves. Volatile pools use a constant-product model for assets expected to move independently. Stable pools use a different curve designed to reduce slippage when both assets should trade near a consistent ratio.
Liquidity providers deposit both tokens in a pair. Their position earns fees when unstaked or AERO emissions when staked in an eligible gauge. A single deposit cannot earn both streams at the same time. The choice depends on expected volume, fee rates, emissions, incentives, and impermanent-loss risk.
Slipstream Concentrated Liquidity
Slipstream is Aerodrome’s concentrated-liquidity system. Providers choose a price range and their capital is used only while the market trades inside it. This can produce tighter quotes and greater fee efficiency than full-range liquidity.
Concentration also raises management risk. When price moves outside the selected range, the position becomes inactive and stops earning swap fees. Narrow ranges require more frequent rebalancing and can magnify exposure to the weaker asset in a pair. Slipstream positions use non-fungible tokens to represent their parameters and ownership.
MetaDEX02
Aerodrome’s current system is described as MetaDEX02, an integrated exchange architecture developed by Dromos Labs. It combines classic pools, Slipstream, gauges, voting, incentives, and launch tools into one economic system.
Documentation also refers to a forthcoming Aero exchange and MetaDEX03. Those products should be treated as roadmap items until their code, launch status, migration process, and economics are publicly final. Investors should not value AERO as if an announced successor platform were already producing revenue.
Gauges, Votes, and Weekly Epochs
Aerodrome runs on seven-day epochs beginning each Thursday at 00:00 UTC. veAERO holders vote during an epoch to decide which eligible gauges receive AERO emissions in the next one. At the same time, revenue earned in prior periods is distributed to qualifying voters.
A gauge connects a liquidity pool to the incentive system. A pool can exist without a gauge, but it cannot receive veAERO votes or distribute AERO emissions until it becomes eligible. This helps reduce abuse in a permissionless system where anyone can create a token and pool.
Projects may deposit voting incentives for a specific pool. veAERO holders can vote for that pool to earn a share of those incentives, causing AERO emissions to flow to its liquidity providers. Ideally, the additional liquidity produces better execution and organic fees. In practice, short-term incentives can also attract votes toward pools that are less productive once subsidies end.
AERO and veAERO
AERO is the liquid ERC-20 incentive token. Holders can lock it for up to four years to create veAERO, an ERC-721 governance position. Longer locks produce more voting power, which decays as the unlock date approaches unless the position is extended.
veAERO holders vote on pool emissions and receive the eligible exchange revenue associated with their chosen pools. That revenue can include swap fees, third-party voting incentives, and launch payments. Managed veAERO positions can aggregate voting power and distribute rewards according to their own strategy and fee structure.
Locking AERO is not the same as validating Base or Ethereum (ETH ). It is an application-level governance mechanism with liquidity and duration risk. The general differences are covered in our cryptocurrency staking guide.
AERO Emissions and Inflation
Aerodrome launched with 500 million AERO, of which 450 million was distributed as vote-locked veAERO positions. Weekly emissions began at 10 million AERO and declined during the protocol’s initial growth phase.
By April 2026, Aerodrome reported a total supply of approximately 1.88 billion AERO, about 51% held as veAERO, and annualized emissions near 10.9%. The protocol’s documented policy held emissions around that rate ahead of the planned Aero upgrade. Five percent of weekly emissions is allocated to a Dromos Labs address and compounded into a max-locked veAERO position.
AERO does not have a fixed maximum supply under the current design. Emissions compensate liquidity providers and can expand activity, but they dilute liquid holders unless demand, fee revenue, or protocol-funded locks absorb the new supply. Future automation or an AERO Fed model remains subject to final design and implementation.
Fees and Revenue Distribution
Aerodrome states that 100% of exchange revenue is distributed to token operators. For staked liquidity, pool swap fees flow to veAERO voters rather than the liquidity provider. Third-party voting incentives and Ignition launch payments are also distributed to voters.
Liquidity providers can remain unstaked and earn pool fees directly. In certain emissions-eligible Slipstream pools, the default protocol take on fees generated by unstaked liquidity is 10%, with the rest remaining with providers.
This creates a visible revenue path for veAERO, but returns vary by pool choice, vote timing, incentives, lock duration, and competition for votes. Headline total fees do not equal the earnings of every locked token.
Aero Launch, Ignition, and Public-Good Funds
Aero Launch is a permissionless interface for creating pools, setting initial price ranges, and optionally locking liquidity. Ignition is a structured launch program in which a project deposits token incentives, veAERO voters direct emissions, and liquidity providers supply the market around a token-generation event.
The protocol also created ecosystem-controlled veAERO positions, including the Public Goods Fund, Flight School, and development wallet. Flight School used revenue to acquire and lock AERO, then reward qualifying new lockers; the program formally concluded in April 2026 and its voting power was integrated into the Public Goods Fund.
Documentation says protocol initiatives had acquired and locked more than 184 million AERO by April 2026. These locks can support alignment and reduce liquid supply, but they also concentrate substantial voting power in Foundation- or team-linked structures.
Potential Benefits of Aerodrome

- Flexible liquidity: users can choose stable, volatile, or concentrated pools and direct fees or emissions according to strategy.

- Permissionless launches: Aero Launch and Ignition give new Base projects a direct liquidity path.
- Transparent epochs: votes, emissions, fees, and distributions are recorded on-chain.
Risks to Consider
- Inflation: AERO has no fixed cap, and annualized emissions remain material.
- Lockup risk: veAERO positions can be locked for years, and voting power decays over time.
- Incentive distortion: pools may attract votes because of temporary payments rather than sustainable fee demand.
- Liquidity-provider risk: impermanent loss, inactive Slipstream ranges, token volatility, and smart-contract failures can exceed rewards.
- Governance concentration: Foundation, development, managed, and large private positions can control significant voting power.
- Base dependency: Aerodrome relies on Base, its centralized sequencer, Ethereum settlement, bridge infrastructure, and ecosystem growth.
- Permissionless-token risk: pool or launch availability does not verify an asset’s quality, code, issuer, or liquidity.
- Roadmap risk: the Aero and MetaDEX03 transition may change emissions, governance, migration, or competitive dynamics.
What Investors Should Monitor
Key operating metrics include organic swap volume, exchange revenue, liquidity by pool type, Slipstream share, average execution quality, active gauges, voting incentives, fee concentration, and retention after launch subsidies end. Investors should separate third-party incentives from recurring user-paid fees.
For AERO, monitor weekly issuance, annualized inflation, the percentage locked as veAERO, average remaining lock time, voting concentration, emissions per dollar of fees, protocol-funded acquisitions, and rewards per veAERO. The final Aero and MetaDEX03 specifications, audit results, launch timeline, and migration policy are also material.

Is Aerodrome Finance (AERO) a Good Investment?
Aerodrome has built a strong liquidity and token-launch position on Base. Its vote-escrow flywheel connects traders, issuers, liquidity providers, and veAERO operators, while Slipstream supports more capital-efficient markets than the protocol’s original pool design.
The main investment tension is between revenue and inflation. veAERO can earn exchange revenue, but liquid AERO is continually issued to attract liquidity, and earning the most from a lock requires active voting and a long time horizon. Large ecosystem positions also make governance concentration important.
AERO may suit investors who expect Base activity and Aerodrome’s fee generation to expand and who understand vote-escrow mechanics. A durable thesis should be supported by organic fees, efficient emissions, broad voter participation, sustained liquidity after incentives, and a clearly executed Aero transition.
