BWXT Lands Army Janus Contract for 20 MW Microreactor at Fort Campbell

BWX Technologies (BWXT ) has been selected to deploy its BWXT Advanced Nuclear Reactor under the U.S. Army’s Janus program, with the first 20-megawatt-electric microreactor planned for the Fort Campbell, Kentucky installation, the company announced on August 26, 2026. BWXT is targeting a groundbreaking for site construction in late 2028, with reactor operations beginning in the early 2030s.
Janus is a nuclear energy initiative the Army runs in partnership with the Defense Innovation Unit, launched in October 2025, to supply power to defense missions and critical installations. According to the Army’s announcement on the selection process, five vendors were down-selected to own, construct and operate microreactors at several military installations. BWXT is the first to be named with a specific site, and the selection moves its BANR design from marketing material into a funded deployment track with a named customer.
That customer relationship is structured differently from a conventional reactor sale. Under Janus, vendors own, construct and operate the reactors themselves, and BWXT said it will work with the Army and potential partners on establishing the operating company structure during the first phase. The company is not delivering a reactor to a utility; it is standing up as a power provider on an Army base.
A Phased Contract With Procurement Starting Now
BWXT will execute the program under a phased contracting approach. The first phase covers final site selection within Fort Campbell, initiating nuclear regulatory processes with the Army, and starting TRISO fuel fabrication at existing BWXT facilities. In parallel, the company will characterize the site and prepare supply chains for long-lead procurements, the hardware orders that fix a reactor build’s schedule years before construction starts.
Dr. Jeff Waksman, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Army for Installations, Energy and Environment, framed the program as a shift from paper to product in the Army’s release:
“The Janus Program is about transitioning from designs and experiments to reliable commercial hardware which secures our energy independence. The Janus Program vendors were selected through a deeply rigorous evaluation on technical, financial, and organizational capabilities conducted by an All-Star panel of dozens of experts from across the nation.”
The regulatory pathway runs through the Army rather than the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, since the reactor will sit on a military installation under Department of Defense authority. BWXT’s release describes “initiating nuclear regulatory processes with the Army” as a first-phase activity, so no licensing milestone has been reached yet. The near-term observables are contractual and physical: the final site decision inside Fort Campbell, the operating company structure, fuel fabrication startup, and the long-lead orders.
What BANR Is and Who Else Wants It
BANR is a high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor fueled by TRISO, tri-structural isotropic particle fuel, and designed for critical infrastructure loads either behind the meter or integrated with the grid. The Janus configuration is rated at 20 megawatts electric from 75 megawatts of thermal output, with a four-year refueling cycle. A single unit occupies less than five acres, can be laid out in multi-unit configurations to scale output, and can run as cogeneration, supplying both electricity and process heat, using existing qualified materials and commercially available components.
TRISO fuel is where BWXT’s position differs from most microreactor developers. The company already operates TRISO fuel operations inside its nuclear fuel business, built through defense programs including Project Pele, the Department of Defense’s transportable reactor effort. First-phase fuel fabrication for Janus will run at those existing facilities rather than requiring a new fuel line to be permitted and built.
The design has commercial interest beyond the Army. Tata Chemicals (TATACHEM.BO ) Soda Ash LLC has signed a letter of intent to explore deploying up to eight BANR units in Wyoming, according to the release. A letter of intent is not an order, but it indicates the industrial heat and power market BWXT is targeting with the same design the Army will now field-test. The Backlog Math Behind the Milestone
The Janus award lands on a company already carrying its largest disclosed order book. In its second quarter 2026 results, filed August 3, 2026, BWXT reported revenue of $901.6 million for the quarter, up 18% from the prior-year period, and total backlog of $8.4 billion at June 30, 2026, up from $6.0 billion a year earlier. Government Operations accounted for $6.8 billion of that backlog, the segment where a defense microreactor program sits.
The company did not disclose a contract value for the Janus selection. What the filing does show is the scale of the base the program builds on: Government Operations revenue of $601.3 million in the quarter, Commercial Operations revenue of $302.5 million, up 72% year over year, and raised full-year 2026 guidance of roughly $3.8 billion in revenue and $662 million to $672 million in adjusted EBITDA. Bookings of $648.9 million in the quarter exceeded revenue recognition, keeping the backlog growing into the Janus work.
For BWXT, the economics of Janus extend past one 20-megawatt unit. The Army’s structure has vendors competing toward owning and operating reactors at multiple installations, and the program’s phased design ties later awards to performance on the technical milestones Waksman described. A successful Fort Campbell deployment positions BANR for the other installations in the Army’s plan and gives the design an operating reference plant, the asset every SMR and microreactor developer needs before commercial buyers sign binding orders instead of letters of intent. The next dated milestones are the late 2028 construction groundbreaking and the early-2030s start of operations.
