Founded in 2019, Moonbeam is a parachain of Polkadot which offers the ability to onboard Ethereum (Solidity) based smart contracts.
What this means is that smart contracts written in Ethereum's coding language, known as Solidity, do not need to be rewritten to work on Moonbeam. This is marketed as the ‘easiest path to multi-chain – something enticing to developers, as multi-chain means a broader audience for their projects.
Moonbeam notes that ‘For many developers and projects, an Ethereum-compatible smart contract approach will be much simpler and faster to implement. And by building these smart contracts on Moonbeam, developers can still integrate with other chains and get value from Polkadot-based network effects'.
Moonbeam lists the following as key features and functionality of its offering,
- Decentralized and Permissionless
- Contains a Full EVM Implementation
- Implements the Web3 RPC API
- Compatible with the Substrate Ecosystem Toolset
- Native Cross-Chain Integration
- On-Chain Governance
For the Moonbeam network to work, it makes use of a native utility token known as Glimmer ‘GLMR'. These tokens not only allow holders to play a role in governance through various voting rights, but also to pay transaction fees, incentivize node operators, and more.
The team at Moonbeam is comprised of over 30 individuals, bringing a wealth of experience to the table. Operations are spearheaded by CEO, Derek Yoo.
