Aurora Targets 30,000-Plus Driverless Trucks by 2030 at Investor Day

Aurora Innovation, Inc. (AUR ) hosted its 2026 Analyst and Investor Day in Dallas on September 23, 2026, where the company outlined a 2030 vision targeting more than 30,000 driverless trucks in operation, a fleet it said would deliver a multi-billion dollar revenue stream with SaaS-like gross margins for its Driver as a Service business model, according to the company’s announcement.
The event gave the investment community a firsthand look at Aurora’s commercial driverless trucking operations. Attendees were offered rides in Aurora Driver-powered trucks without a person behind the wheel on a segment of the company’s Dallas-to-Houston commercial route, which Aurora described as an industry-first driverless passenger ride offering.
Aurora said leadership and ecosystem partners would use the event to detail how the company has reached what it called a critical inflection point, driven by proven software, scalable hardware, an accelerating supply ramp, and strong customer demand.
“Transformative technologies develop for years before reaching a decisive commercial inflection point – Aurora has arrived at that moment,” said Chris Urmson, Aurora’s co-founder and chief executive officer. He said the company has emerged from its building phase and is now revolutionizing how goods move while unlocking safety benefits and creating economic value across the freight ecosystem.
Customer Demand and Fleet Agreements
Aurora said it nearly doubled its driverless customers in 2026 as its autonomous truck supply accelerated, and that it is fully allocated to exit 2026 with 200 driverless trucks in operation through Transport as a Service agreements.
Hirschbach plans to scale its autonomous fleet with the intent to own and operate 500 trucks under a Driver as a Service agreement, with truck deliveries slated to begin in 2027. Aurora characterized Hirschbach’s intention as a non-binding memorandum of understanding and said it is in negotiations with a number of additional customers for Driver as a Service agreements.
Aurora said this commercial momentum is anchored by a strong safety record and customer utilization. The company reported that the Aurora Driver has safely completed more than 500,000 driverless miles since commercial launch, and it described the system as one of the safest and most experienced drivers on the road. Aurora Driver-powered trucks operating for McLane, Werner, and other customers are averaging an annualized rate of more than 225,000 miles per year, a utilization figure Aurora said is more than double that of a traditional truck.
Second-Generation Hardware and Manufacturing
Aurora said its second-generation commercial hardware kit is engineered for a one-million-mile operating lifespan while cutting costs by more than half, a milestone the company called critical on its path to positive gross profit. Roush has begun volume upfitting and is targeting a production rate of 20 trucks per week in October 2026.
The Aurora Driver is currently upfitted on the International LT Series truck and integrated lineside on the Volvo VNL Autonomous at Volvo’s New River Valley facility in Virginia, a vehicle-agnostic approach Aurora said aligns with customers’ diverse fleet preferences. PACCAR and Aurora are jointly defining the path to a scalable launch of Aurora’s third-generation commercial hardware kit integrated with PACCAR’s future autonomy-enabled platform on PACCAR’s assembly lines.
Aurora’s 2030 vision, presented during the event, targets more than 30,000 driverless trucks in operation delivering what the company described as a multi-billion dollar revenue stream and SaaS-like gross margins for the Driver as a Service model. “We have the enablers to drive real market growth. This momentum puts us firmly on the path to profitability,” said David Maday, Aurora’s chief financial officer.
The presentation was scheduled to begin at 8:45 a.m. Central time and webcast on Aurora’s investor relations website, with a replay available for 30 days following the live presentation. Aurora is also set to host a Partner Summit on September 24, 2026, with several dozen current and prospective customers, where the company said it will educate attendees on how it is building a seamless customer experience.
