Amazon Lifts Full-Time U.S. Operations Floor Wage to $20 Hourly

Amazon (AMZN ) said on September 16, 2026 that it is investing more than $1.5 billion in higher pay for its U.S. core operations employees, raising minimum starting pay for full-time roles to $20 an hour while adding a lifetime banking benefit and an employee grocery discount.
The increase of $1 per hour for eligible employees brings the minimum starting wage for full-time core operations roles, many of which require no prior experience, to $20 an hour across the country, with the average hourly wage reaching nearly $24 an hour, according to Amazon’s announcement, written by Udit Madan, Senior Vice President, Amazon Worldwide Operations. Amazon said that when the value of its benefits package is included, average total compensation comes to more than $32 an hour.
Amazon said its minimum starting pay has increased more than 17% over the past three years. It also operates an annual step plan under which pay increases during each of an employee’s first three years with the company.
Madan wrote that Amazon reviews pay and benefits together each year, and that employees he hears from in the field value a good paycheck alongside the full range of benefits the company offers. He framed the September 16 measures as three new announcements building on that existing package.
Day 1 Financial Banking Benefit
The second measure is Day 1 Financial, a membership in First Tech Federal Credit Union that Amazon said provides qualified employees, their spouses, and their children with banking services “they can keep for life,” including after their time at Amazon ends. The company said that with traditional banking, fees and limited access to straightforward financial tools can make it harder for people to get the most from what they earn, and that the benefit removes some of those barriers while giving employees and their families another resource to manage their money and plan for the future.
Standard checking and savings accounts under the benefit carry $0 overdraft fees, $0 monthly maintenance fees, and no account minimums, and no credit history is required to open an account. Members receive access to thousands of surcharge-free ATMs nationwide, plus up to $300 per year in out-of-network ATM fee reimbursement. The package also includes mobile and online banking, direct deposit, and credit-building programs designed to create emergency savings and increase financial stability, as well as access to credit cards, auto loans, and home loans for those who choose and qualify to use them.
First Tech Federal Credit Union is an independent, member-owned financial institution federally insured by the NCUA, and Amazon said access will begin rolling out in late 2026 before becoming broadly available in 2027.
Amazon said Day 1 Financial builds on Brightside Financial Care, a free service that connects employees one-on-one with a financial assistant for help with budgeting, managing debt and student loans, emergency expenses, and understanding eligible benefits. More than 150,000 hourly employees have used Brightside since 2022, according to the company.
Grocery Discount and Existing Benefits
Starting October 1, 2026, every Amazon employee in the U.S. will have access to a new grocery discount. It provides an uncapped 10% off eligible groceries and everyday essentials on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market online, and an uncapped 20% off in-store at Whole Foods Market, including the hot bar and salad bar. The discount applies to purchases made through the employee’s Amazon account and can be combined with existing Prime member discounts.
Madan wrote that Amazon has invested heavily through the years in its ability to deliver fresh groceries and everyday essentials quickly and reliably, and that when the company builds a capability like that, it wants its teammates to benefit from it just as much as customers do.
The new measures add to benefits Amazon said it already offers. Those include healthcare from day one for regular full-time employees, with an Essential Plan at $5 a week with $5 copays; a free Prime membership for eligible employees, with benefits including fast shipping, streaming, fuel savings, and Grubhub+; Career Choice, which provides prepaid tuition of up to $5,250 a year through more than 475 education partners so employees can earn degrees or certificates; a 401(k) with company match; and paid parental leave, flexible time off, and 24/7 mental health support through Resources for Living.
The September 16 announcement follows a separate Amazon commitment of more than $230 million in higher pay and expanded benefits for Whole Foods Market team members, under which the company said more than 100,000 U.S. team members will gain access to its comprehensive benefits.
