Play To Earn

With the rise of the metaverse in late 2021, a lot of projects found digital universes to be a perfect way to start developing online games. This also allowed them to revolutionize the entire gaming industry by implementing a single mechanism, which is P2E.

P2E, as most people familiar with the metaverse likely know, stands for Play To Earn. This is a model that was only made possible in the recently developed game based on blockchain technology, which allows users to play the game and receive rewards for it. So far, players have only known the requirement to pay in order to play. Never before were they paid to play games, and so this model drove entire masses of people towards the new projects.

Today, we wanted to look into the projects that offer P2E functionality and recommend some of them that might be a good place to start for anyone who wishes to switch to blockchain gaming and try earning as they spend their free time engaging in this new form of gaming.

1. Axie Infinity

The first on our list is Axie Infinity, which is a project that allows users to enter its vast world, purchase creatures called Axies, train and upgrade them, breed them, and make them stronger by adding new body parts that grant them unique advantages. After that, all that is left is to battle other players and win, and you will be rewarded for doing so, thanks to the P2E model.

Plus, each Axie is unique, coming in the form of an NFT, meaning that you can buy them and sell them, breed them to create and sell new ones, and more. Axie is the biggest game in the crypto industry right now, and it is easy to see why.

2. Smooth Love Potion

Smooth Love Potion is actually a project closely tied to Axie Infinity. Its tokens, SLP, are earned by playing the Axie game. In fact, its tokens serve as a replacement for experience points. While they do have value, it is very low, currently at around $0.0048. In other words, you will have a hard time earning from selling them, although that is still possible.

Meanwhile, their primary use case is to be used in the Axie ecosystem for breeding new digital pets. When you breed Axies, you can create new ones, which are unique and tied to a brand-new NFT. As such, they can be sold or trained, upgraded, and used in battle. Breeding starts with 100 SLP, but it gradually grows. Also, you can breed Axies a maximum of 7 times to avoid hyperinflation, and the 7th time will cost you 2,100 SLP.

3. Aurory

In the third spot, we have a tactical, turn-based NFT creature battler JRPG known as Aurory. Aurory is based on Solana, and it allows players to explore a rather diverse and rich metaverse where they can travel across two worlds known as Tokane and Antik, and complete various quests, fight powerful enemies, uncover lost relics, and even compete against other players.

Typically for these kinds of projects, the Aurory relies heavily on NFTs, amd it uses the P2E mechanics that have made many other projects very successful. However, one way in which it differs from the others is that it is completely free to play, which lowers the entry barriers for new arrivals to the crypto gaming sector.

4. Ertha

Next up, we have Ertha — a project that offers a digital version of the planet Earth, which is split into 350,000 equal territories called HEXes. Each HEX is a plot of land that can be purchased and owned simply by buying and holding the corresponding NFT. However, this is still a game with P2E elements, so you can take on a role in a country to which your HEX belongs, and receive rewards for participating in the game and fulfilling your role in this digital society.

Ertha is a very fun and unique game, and we are quite interested in seeing where it will go as it continues to evolve.

5. DeRace

The fifth on our list is a project called DeRace, which describes itself as a complete NFT horse racing ecosystem. The project’s goal is to bring a new standard to the GameFi industry, allowing users to buy and breed NFT horses, create ones with unique characteristics, equip them, and even build their own NFT hippodromes where they can host races.

As such, the project stands to disrupt three multi-billion dollar industries, including video gaming, gambling, and horse racing. There is certainly a massive opportunity in the lack of video games with gambling features, and DeRace is in a perfect position to deliver it and revolutionize the sector.

6. Decentral Games

Halfway down the list, we have Decentral Games — a project that aims to build free P2E games in its own metaverse, where players would get to experience economic freedom through self-custody, aligned incentives, and delegation of yield-bearing metaverse assets.

Right now, the project has a play-to-earn metaverse poker game live, known as ICE Poker. The game generates revenue for the Decentral Games Treasury using NFT mints, activations, secondary sale royalties, and various upgrades. Meanwhile, the project’s token, DG, serves as a governance token that governs the DG Treasury, and accrues value from the ICE Poker ecosystem.

7. Gods Unchained

Gods Unchained is a free-to-play tactical card game that wishes to return true ownership of in-game items to players. In the past, when buying games, players would own them on discs and be their real owners. Today, with the games being purchased as digital copies, they can be given or taken away with a push of a button. It is the same with cards, as players used to own physical cards for their games, which is no longer the case.

Gods Unchained is a game that grants this ownership of in-game items back by using NFTs. The P2E mechanism kicks in as players are given rewards for playing the game, and they can use them to purchase new NFTs or trade them on the open market.

8. REVV

Then, we have a utility token REVV, which is used as an in-game currency in blockchain motorsport games created and issued by Animoca Brands. The token is there to maintain the gaming economy in different games, such as REVV Racing, F1 Delta Time, and MotoGP Ignition.

All three projects feature the P2E model, and through it, gamers receive financial benefits for their contribution to the game world. They receive the token REVV, which is obtained through participation in time-trial races, grand-prix tournaments, staking of race cars, and more.

9. Star Atlas

In the ninth spot, we have Star Atlas — a metaverse game that takes place in the year 2620, where three different factions are locked in a war against one another, including humans, sentient androids, and a variety of alien races.

The goal is to create strategies nad tactical plans of action regarding how you will interact with other players, and even entire factions, compete for resources, and more. The game combines numerous genres such as flight simulation, strategy, RPG, and more. It is also based on multiple fundamental gameplay pillars, such as combat, deep space exploration, choosing in-game professions, mining resources, and more.

10. MyNeighborAlice

The tenth on our list is MyNeighborAlice, which is a user-friendly game that was inspired by Animal Crossing. The players can purchase an NFT that will grant them ownership of land – their own, private island. They can then explore it, collect various resources, and use them to build different items and decorate their island.

This is a relaxing game that offers daily tasks and contests that allow players to win rewards, which is where the P2E element comes in. Furthermore, it is a very user-friendly game where players never interact with the blockchain directly, and instead, they do all the purchases through the in-game character called Alice.

11. UFO Gaming

Nearing the end of our list, we have UFO Gaming, which is a decentralized gaming platform featuring NFTs, DeFi functionalities, and P2E elements. The platform is meant to feature multiple games, and so far, it has already launched the first one, known as Super Galactic. The game is a mix of arcade action games and an RPG, where players can also receive NFTs from the game’s own collection.

The idea is to have the players battle against a hostile alien race in a scavenged world, defend world peace, and earn rewards for completing various daily quests.

12. The Sandbox

Finally, we have The Sandbox, which is a popular metaverse project that, unlike others on this list, doesn’t have one or even a few games of its own, but rather it offers simple-to-use development tools to allow community members to create their own games. The Sandbox recently won Binance’s Launchpad project of the year reward for 2022, and it also announced only days earlier that it is collaborating with Tony Hawk to create the biggest skateboarding park ever seen, all within its metaverse.

The project’s idea is to let its community members express themselves and create the games they always wanted to play. More than that, these games will then be available to others, who can even earn from playing them, thanks to the P2E model.

Conclusion

The crypto industry is becoming more and more Web3 oriented, with interoperability on the rise, decentralized finance offering nearly all banking services in decentralized form, and now, even the games pay you to play them. The world is changing, and not just in the world of finance but also in every other sector that the blockchain industry has touched thus far. For the time being, the change seems to be a positive one, and we are interested to see what will come next. As for P2E games, the projects listed above all offer the ability to earn while playing games, which is why we believe they are worth considering if you wish to experience this relatively new phenomenon.
