UiPath: Leading Automation by Embracing the AI Agentic Era

mm

In the past few years, the explosion in AI capacity has made clear that many tasks will and already are being automated away. It might seem to some people a recent phenomenon, and a transformative one.

But in practice, automation of both physical and cognitive tasks has been going on for decades, and generalized use of AI is just the latest step in this process. For example, most factories today are highly automated, with industrial robots handling parts, machining, welding, assembly, etc.

Similarly, we tend to underestimate the amount of automation that already happens in white-collar jobs. Automatic, self-updating invoice system, CV filters for HR, payroll processing, automating redirection of customer service tickets, money transfers, a lot of these tasks that had previously been handled by humans are already being managed almost exclusively by software.

As such, it is likely that the most important and most profitable path for many AI applications is automation of enterprise functions, especially as most companies have been digitalizing their production and customer management system in the past decade.

Many companies have been built on creating and optimizing this software at scale. These companies are in an ideal position to deploy the latest AI agents within their network of customers who have trusted them for their automation needs.

One such company is UiPath, a long-established leader in enterprise automation founded in 2005.

UiPath Overview

UiPath History

UiPath was founded in 2005 in Bucharest, Romania, under the name DeskOver. The engineer-led company spent many years bootstrapping and looking for the right market fit, initially working on outsourcing and building software developer kits and various software tools to automate tasks for developers.

They ultimately found the right direction with automation of tasks for enterprise business customers within the “Роботизированная автоматизация процессов” category (RPA).

They pivoted to this segment in 2013 and renamed the company to UiPath in 2015.

RPA combines APIs and user interface (UI) interactions to integrate and perform repetitive tasks between enterprise and productivity applications. This form of automation uses rule-based software to perform business process activities at a high volume, freeing up human resources to prioritize more complex tasks.

So, despite the name, “robots” in RPA are software bots, not physical robots, although of course this difference might slowly fade in the near future as both AI and robotics progress.

While today UiPath is not limited to RPA, this is in itself a large market, and poised for explosive growth: it was worth $4.68B in 2025 and is expected to grow by 29% CAGR, to $35.84B in 2033.

This shift toward RPA was initially done in a trial run by a large Indian company, and would become the template for future customer acquisitions, which grew explosively.

“So we had this visual “low code” that was really novelty at that time. And in all RPA space, it was only us and Blue Prism that have this “low code” approach. So we had like a nice flowchart to design and automation, and nobody else had that at this point. And basically, he was actually looking to get some leverage on Blue Prism and they were really considered kind of inflexible.”

Daniel Dines – UiPath Co-founder

By April 2016, the company had released its Front Office and Back Office Server suites and already secured 250 enterprise customers, with more than 10,000 users.

In 2019, the company acquired several other companies in process documentation and process mining, and reached 5,000 customers worldwide.

In April 2021, the company did its IPO at the NYSE, raising $1.3B and becoming one of the largest US software IPOs in history at the time.

In 2022, UiPath acquired Re:infer, a natural language processing developer, followed by the release of many AI tools in 2024 and later.

By 2025, the company had partnerships and collaborations with OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Nvidia, Snowflake, and many others.

UiPath By The Number

Since its turn toward the RPA market, UiPath has been selling its services as subscriptions, generating recurring revenues.

Since 2019, UiPath has more than doubled its customer base, with around 10,750 enterprises using the company’s software and AI solution in 2026. Of these customers, 2,565 had an ARR (Annual Recurring Revenue) of more than $100,000.

Over half of the customer base came from banking/finance, manufacturing, and government. Around half of customers are in the USA, by far the largest market for UiPath, followed by India and the UK.

The company generated a total of $1.8B in ARR in 2025, growing 11% year-to-year. Cloud services’ ARR is growing even quicker, at a 20% yearly compouding growth.

Maybe the most impressive metric of the company’s business is a 107% dollar-based net retention, a metric reflecting that the company’s customers are not only staying with UiPath, but are growing their business with the company at a greater rate than the natural and avoidable attrition rate experienced by any subscription business.

Another impressive metric is the 83.2% gross margin and operating margins of 31%, reflecting on how capital efficient the business model can be, with up to $404,565 in revenue per employee in 2026.

The company is truly global, with 2/3rd of its 4,000+ employees working in remote or multi-regional roles, and many activity hubs spread throughout the USA, Europe, and India.

UiPath’s Strategy

Двигаясь быстро

The company grew through a very aggressive strategy of global expansion as soon as it found its successful niche. So aggressive that its management says it has been taking inspiration from no other than Genghis Khan.

“I remember this board meeting where Daniel put out a plan to go from $35 million to $200 at the time. A very, very aggressive growth plan. I was joking with my team, saying our strategy is like, uh, Genghis Khan strategy.  You should go faster than them. You know how they conquered China? Their army was faster than Chinese army, so they were defeating all the Chinese cities, and they couldn’t catch them. So that was kind of my strategy: let’s go, let’s spread, let’s see where it works and let’s double down on it.”

Daniel Dines – UiPath Co-founder

This strategy is still in place, with for example UiPath moving fast in entering the healthcare market, helping with hospital and clinics’ functions like medical records summarization, claim denial prevention and resolution, and prior authorization.

UiPath Beyond Automation

Building on its success with RPA, UiPath offers not just more efficient business processes but also the automation of repetitive white-collar tasks. It also provides a way for management to systematize its data and sales process.

This creates an automatically auditable dataset that reduces compliance costs, which contributed greatly to UiPath’s commercial success in highly regulated sectors like banking, manufacturing, and government.

With the recent acquisition of WorkFusion in 2026, a pioneer in AI agents for financial crime compliance, UiPath is further cementing this key contribution in compliance.

“UiPath gives us the scale to grow faster than we ever could alone, without losing the heart of who we are, our people, our products, and our mission. Together, we’re creating something bigger than any one company: we are modernizing financial crime compliance.”

Adam Famularo – CEO of WorkFusion

This generation of data for management use and for audit makes UiPath a very useful tool, often recommended by consulting and auditing firms working as go-to-market partners for the software company.

As such, UiPath is growing not just from its own sales efforts, but also from its stellar reputation with important partners already trusted by large corporations to improve their processes and business operations. This includes major consulting, accounting, and HR firms like Cognizant PWC, Deloitte, or Infosys.

UiPath is also adapting its RPA and AI agents tools to pre-existing marketplaces, automatically integrating with existing large platforms, like for example Salesforce’s AgentExchange, where UiPath solutions “ unify automation, AI agents, and human interactions into streamlined, end-to-end business processes».

It is also launching many industry-specific solutions, especially in the business vertical where it already has a solid reputation. For example, UiPath launched in March 2026 several AI agents specialized in retail and manufacturing, with:

UiPath & AI

UiPath’s Early Moves In AI

Historically, UiPath was mostly focused on automating repetitive tasks that could be handled by relatively simple software, with smooth onboarding and implementation through the company’s flexibility a key advantage.

Today, it is integrating AI in the same way, identifying areas where the technology is powerful and reliable enough to be trusted to take the reins, integrating together classical RPA and APIs with modern AI agents.

As mentioned before, UiPath was already embracing the ancestors of modern LLMs and other AI systems through acquisitions in 2022, as it is acutely aware that any delays in modernizing the company’s offering would let other AI solutions outpace the historical RPA services in both quality and cost reduction.

One of the early product offerings by the company had been the UiPath Autopilot for Developers feature, which uses GenAI for workflow creation. It currently sees a 70% acceptance rate for its text-to-workflow suggestions.

UiPath’s AI Agents & Trust

An important factor in helping AI adoption and enterprise trusting UiPath over other potential AI providers is the  UiPath AI Trust Layer. It now provides centralized management for LLM usage, ensuring zero third-party training on customer data, an important factor when enterprise customers would take business and legal risks if any data were leaked by the AI models.

This effort in securing AI adoption is already paying off, with UiPath notably winning in early 2026 the AIUC-1 Certification, the world’s first independent certification standard for AI agents, launched by the Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company (AIUC).

“The AIUC-1 achievement builds on UiPath’s recent ISO/IEC 42001:2023 certification. UiPath is the first enterprise automation company to achieve AIUC-1 certification. To achieve this, they subjected their suite of agentic AI systems to 2000+ technical evaluations, and a comprehensive audit of their AI policies and technical guardrails.” Rajiv Dattani – Co-founder at Artificial Intelligence Underwriting Company

The company is now moving toward a multi-agent workflow, using several AI agents that can plan and adapt independently, while collaborating with each other. They are integrated into the UiPath Platform.

This trend is supporting the so-called “governance-as-code” as the new must-have for keeping agents aligned, secure, and compliant during software architecture verification.

UiPath’s Future

Overall, UiPath is a pretty straightforward story of the deployment of software automation for enterprises, mimicking the evolution of the industry as a whole.

It began as an outsourcing tool, grew into a powerful and highly profitable productivity tool with SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) subscriptions, and is now at the forefront of AI deployment and adoption.

It has been an essential service provider in improving efficiency and compliance in many highly-regulated industries like finance, healthcare, and government, notoriously cautious in adopting new technologies, due to legal and regulatory risks.

This reputation as a trusted and tested provider of IT automation is playing a big role in turning UiPath into a provider and implementer of AI agents in these industries. A key competitive advantage is that UiPath has experience in managing sensitive data safely, and can be trusted to help with compliance, while inexperienced internal efforts or Silicon Valley’s “move fast and break things” ethos could lead to serious problems.

Future investors should monitor that the company’s growth path stays in the current >10% CAGR trend. And that growth of its AI agent solution is the driving force behind the company’s expansion, ensuring it stays at the top of the industry in terms of technological capabilities.
